Happy Monday Parents!

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend! We had a very eventful day in grade 3! We began with math where we continued learning about area. The students learned about square units, and how to calculate area based on the number of squares inside of a shape.

In language we focussed on verbs! We began by refreshing our memory of what a verb is (what a person, place, or thing does) by playing a game. The class worked in groups and were given a place, they were then required to come up with some verbs that are associated with that place! We had some amazingly creative responses (for example whisper at a movie theatre, or operate at a doctor’s office!)  The class then wrote down their spelling words in their agendas before recess.

After lunch, recess, and French the class came back and had time to work on their pioneer poems during UOI. I am very proud of all of the learning demonstrated throughout these poems! The students have been very creative!

After second lunch and recess the class had more time to finish up their poems before gym, agendas and kiss and ride!

A Special Request from the MYP Students...

"Dear Parents and Guardians,

St. Jude's Academy's upper school students are organizing a winter clothing drive for 50 Syrian Refugee families.  We hope that you are able to participate by sending in your gently-used winter clothes.  The students are mostly looking for jackets, coats, snow pants, mittens, and hats, but anything would be appreciated.  

The age range of the children of the Syrian families are from 2 years old to 18 years old.  The drive will be running until Friday, November 18, 2016.  We will be collecting all items at the end of every school day, and students will be awarded house points for each article of clothing!

MYP Students "

Hello Parents! 

I hope you are having a wonderful weekend! We had a wonderful and exciting day in grade 3 on Friday. We began with math where we had an introduction to area. Students were given tangram pictures and were required to fill in the area with different shapes, and then count how many small green triangles can fit in their tangram picture. 

In language we began with our spelling test, then we moved on and the students had the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of plural nouns by completing a plural noun assessment. Students changed singular nouns to plural nouns by either adding "s" or "es". 

After recess, lunch, and french the class came back and we had UOI. We began working on our next assignment-pioneer poems! Students had time to explore the books in class on pioneers and were given the success criteria to complete the assignment. Students are writing an acrostic poem with the word "pioneers" in full sentences using information that they have learned about pioneers! Students had time to work on their rough draft on Friday and we will be completing our good copies on Monday! The class is coming up with some amazing sentences! 

We finished the day with music and gym before completing agendas and heading off to kiss and ride!

Happy Thursday Parents!

We had another exciting day here in grade 3! We began with math where I went over perimeter briefly again before the students go to work on calculating perimeter using meters. Students measured gardens and had to problem solve when they were provided the perimeter and had to calculate the side lengths!

We then moved onto language where we focused on plural nouns! We learned about when to add s, versus adding es, and then played a game to demonstrate our knowledge. Two students were at the white board and provided a word, the students then had to change the word into the plural form!

After lunch, recess, and french, we had UOI for UOI we were making our very own cloth dolls, the students were very patient as we carefully went through each step together. They were also very helpful when students in the class were having difficulty! In the end we made some really beautiful dolls made entirely from folding and cutting-just like the pioneers would!

We ended the day with gym before agendas and kiss and ride!

Happy Wednesday Parents!

I was feeling under the weather today and the students had a substitute teacher. Here is what the students did today!
The class began with math where they were introduced to measuring perimeter with centimeters. The students were taught to add the sides in order to calculate the distance around a shape.

In language the students played around the world with nouns, where they chose a letter of the alphabet and either person, place, or thing. They then had to come up with a noun for that letter! Afterwards the students demonstrated their understanding by completing pages in their writers books.

For UOI the students completed a tracking scavenger hunt! The grade 3 teachers placed foot prints all over the school and the grade threes were divided into groups and given and animal that they had to track by their footprints until they found the animal! I heard that they all had great fun completing this activity, and I am sad that I missed it!

Halloween and Making Butter!

Happy Tuesday Parents!

We had another amazing day here in grade 3, we began with math where we continued our unit on measurement. Building off our knowledge of the centimeter and meter we learned about the kilometer. The students worked on deciding whether or not different distances should be measured in meters, centimeters, or kilometers.

In language we worked on our nouns! We talked about proper nouns in comparison to regular nouns. The students completed a scavenger hunt where they were required to find a noun and a proper noun for each letter of the alphabet! The class worked so hard and came up with some really interesting words!

After lunch, recess, and French we had UOI, we had a very exciting day in UOI. We acted like pioneers and read a story about making butter before we had the opportunity to make our very own butter! We began by pouring cream into a jar and then we took turns working together to shake the jar checking the jar periodically. The first time we looked it looked like whipped cream! Then it looked a little bit like curdled milk! Then all of the sudden we had butter and buttermilk! We rinsed the butter with water a few times to ensure all of the buttermilk was out! Next, the class had to be very patient while I handed out crackers with butter to each student, we decided to wait for everyone to have their cracker so we could enjoy the first bite together! The class loved the butter-they said it was even better than the butter from the store, but it took a lot more work!

We ended the day with some journaling before heading off to gym and completing agendas before kiss and ride.
