Happy Last School Day of 2016!!

I am so proud of all of the students hard work at the Christmas Concert last night!

We had a great last day filled with (some cleaning!), watching movies, spending time together, and a house game!
The students opened their Christmas gifts from me! I chose a special book for each and every one of them!

SJA collected 10 boxes filled to the brim with canned goods!

All of these toys were dropped off today to find their way onto Santa's sleigh!

Miss Karina won our communicator award and I am so proud of her!

I have been so incredibly blessed this year with such wonderful class filled with such kind, warmhearted, and special students. Each one of them holds a special place in my heart.

I hope you all have a relaxing holiday spent with family, friends, and loved ones! Be safe and have fun!

Important Reminders:
  • Reading comprehension: I have given students two small books to read over the holidays along with short reading comprehension work for each.
  • Math packages: I have given students some math worksheets on time and calendar work just so that they can practice over the holiday!

Happy Wednesday Parents!

The students were with Miss. Bannon again today as I was running rehearsals for the Christmas Concert tomorrow! The class began thier day with math where they were applying thier knowledge and understanding of time and calendars to complete a short quiz. This quiz will help me gain an understanding of where we need to steer our focus for math in the new year!

After math the class worked on a short writing task. They wrote about if they "Lived In a Snowglobe" , I had the chance to look at a couple of the students written work and saw some beautiful descriptive words and similes throughout thier writing which makes me very proud!

After first lunch and recess all of the classes headed down to the auditorium where we had a full dress rehearsal! I am so excited for all of the parents to see our hard work that is most definitely paying off!

We ended the day with Mr. Oliver and Mr. H before heading off to kiss and ride!

Important Reminders:

  • Tomorrow is the Christmas concert! There is an afternoon show beginning at 12, and an evening show at 7pm (students should be here at 6:30pm) come to school in full costume! Please if your child will not be attending either performance let know as soon as possible as I will have to make alternative arrangements! All of the parts of our play are very important!
  • Bake sale tomorrow
  • Read 25 minutes

6th Day!

Happy Monday Parents!

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend! The students had a great day in third grade today! Today the students were combined with Miss. Ross's class and had Miss. Bannon as Miss Ross and I were in the auditorium with the Christmas Concert rehearsals. The students loved being with their friends from the other class! They began with a friction science experiment where the students were required to build different ramps using different materials to test the friction by rolling toy cars down the ramps! They used felt, tin foil, and bubble wrap! It turns out that bubble wrap has the most friction!

Afterward the students worked on math, where they used their knowledge of elapsed time on a calendar to answer different questions!

The class spent the afternoon making beautiful tree ornaments for Christmas! They were all very creative and detailed in making their ornaments!

I really missed all of my students SO much!

Important Reminders:

  • Dress Rehearsal tomorrow WEAR PJ's (except Scott and Shane)! Don't worry about Who-Hair until Wednesday
  • Read 25 minutes
  • Toy and Food Drive
  • Christmas Concert Wednesday at Noon and at 7pm (students be there at 6:30pm)

Happy Weekend Parents!

It is the last weekend before Christmas! We had a very busy Friday in Grade 3! We began with a fun math activity where we used our knowledge of telling time and writing time in a number of ways to make a schedule for the grade 2 class! Our class was very excited and asked if we could give the class the schedule we made for them!

After math we had UOI where we learned about Friction, we began by watching a short video and then discussing friction, its definition and also the bumps on surfaces that cause friction. We had a science activity today where we did crayon rubbings of different surfaces in order to "see" the friction that different surfaces have!

In the afternoon the students had french, and then came to the auditorium to help make decorations for the Christmas concert!

Christmas Concert Information

Holiday Baskets and Cold Weather Policy

Happy Thursday Parents!

We had a very busy day here in Grade 3! We began the day by taking up our math homework from last night! Some students are still getting a little bit confused about telling time in words and we will be spending more class time on it tomorrow!

After math we made our way to the auditorium to help run the Christmas Concert practice, students worked on Christmas reading comprehension work and math work while I had some volunteers to help get classes for their practices! I was very proud of how well-behaved our class was and how helpful they were throughout the day!

Students had recess inside because of the cold weather, then lunch and french as usual! Afterward they continued to help with the Concert preparation and we had another run through of our own play that is turning out so nicely!

After second lunch and recess the students had a much needed break and were allowed to read before heading off to gym and completing agendas before kiss and ride!

Important Reminders:

  • Re-registration Packages
  • Read 25 minutes
  • Spelling test tomorrow!

Have a wonderful evening!

Holiday Baskets!

Here are some more holiday baskets being auctioned off at the Christmas concert by the Parent Guild!

Happy Wednesday Parents!

The holidays are fast apporaching! We began our day in grade 3 with math where we learned about telling time using words! Students have a worksheet for homework tonight to practice writing time as such: half-past 3, quarter-to 6, ten-to 5, etc. It can be a tricky concept for students to understand so I have attached a picture for reference!

For language we practices dilligently for our Christmas concert! The students are so excited to show all of you their hard work! I am so proud of them! Please remember each and every role is central to our play and should students need to be away for either the day or night performance next Wednesday please let me know as soon as possible!

After lunch, recess, and French we were Inquirers! We learned about speed and distance through conducting a science experiement using balloon rockets! We learned that adding more air to a balloon rocket allows the balloon to travel farther but not faster! Smaller balloons could go fast but not as far! Students used the scientific method to make predictions and were asking aamazing inquiry questions throughout the investigation!

After second lunch and recess we had music and gym before heading back to class and completing agendas before kiss and ride.

Important Reminders:
  • Math page for homework
  • UOI Science Sheet
  • Toy and Food Drive
  • Re-registration Packages
  • Read 25 minutes
  • Spelling due tomorrow

Have a wodnerful evening!

Tomorrow in Math...

Here is what we are doing in math tomorrow! We are continuing with our lessons on telling time but we are moving on to using words to tell time:

Happy Tuesday Parents!

We began our day with math where we started by taking up the work from yesterday’s class! I let the students use my red pens and they were very excited about that! We then worked on telling time, most students remember how to tell time from previous years but some are still having trouble with the minute hands! As a result I am dividing the lesson into two parts and tomorrow we are discussing telling time in a different way (half past, quarter to etc.).

In language we discussed inferencing or making conclusions based on evidence from the text and using our own background knowledge. We read a story and answered a couple questions as a class on the carpet and then students read riddles and guessed a place that the author is trying to describe. This is going to help them while they are reading stories on their own!

After recess and lunch we had a very exciting UOI where we were able to work on the tablets to complete a scavenger hunt! We were all inquirers and researchers and used our resources to answer questions and come up with some amazing facts about forces and motion to share with the class. I am so proud of all of their hard work and they LOVED having access to the technology!

After French, second lunch and recess, we watched some really amazing videos that were brought in by a student in Ms. Ross’s class about forces and motion to help us gain a better understanding of key concepts such as gravity and friction.

We ended the day with gym and agendas before heading off to kiss and ride

Important reminders:
  • Math Worksheet Homework for tomorrow
  • Read 25 Minutes
  • Spelling Due THURSDAY
  • Toy and Food Drive
  • Re-Registration as soon as possible
  • Aftercare/Book Orders/After School Programs due

Have a wonderful evening,

Ms. Glover

Basket Auction and Candy Grams!

Hello Parents! Please see the attached flyer for the first of many amazing baskets being auctioned off at the Christmas Concert next week by the Parent Guild to raise money for technology!

The MYP students are raising money for a student in Africa to go to high school by selling candy grams for the holidays!

Happy Snowy Monday Parents!

We had a great day here in third grade! We began our day learning more about the calendar! This was our first lesson for our unit on measurement for time, money, temperature, and calendars! The students learned how calendars are very important for scheduling different activities.

We then had a brain break before writing our spelling words in our agendas! Some students haven't been completing all of their spelling work each week and as a result the spelling work will now be due on Thursday's so I can ensure that the students have finished all of the work!

Afterward we had time to practice the Christmas Concert! It is coming along very nicely! Again if students will not be at either performance next Wednesday please let me know so that I can make alternate arrangements for them! They all have such important roles!

After lunch, recess, and French we had UOI! We learned about balanced and unbalanced forces by exploring balances (or scales). Students used the scales to balance objects. They were very good inquirers and came up with amazing definitions to add to our UOI word wall for unbalanced and balanced forces!

We ended the day with Music, Gym and agendas before heading off to kiss and ride!

Important Reminders:

  • Math Homework 112-113
  • Read 25 Minutes
  • Spelling due Thursday
  • Lunch forms (December 16th)
  • Aftercare Fees Due
  • Toy and Food Drive

Friday 9 December 2016

Happy Friday Parents!

We had a great day in grade 3! We began our day with Math where the students completed a pre-test for our next unit on Measurement of Time, Money, Temperature, and Weight. Afterward students had time to have some fun completing a Christmas present where they had to think about thier favourite holiday memory or what they would like for Christmas! We then put them on our door to match our tree!

In language we practiced our Christmas concert play! I am very excited with how it is all coming together and I couldn't be more happy with all of their hard work!

After lunch, recess, and French we had our spelling test on Lesson 13 in the spelling workbook! We then moved onto UOI where we began by brainstorming as a class how forces can be used to change the shape of different objects, how we can push or pull and manipulate objects. We came up with wonderful ideas including ice and snow! We then had the opportunity to change the shape of play-dough using push and pull forces!

After second lunch and recess we completed a much needed classroom clean! Students cleared out their notebooks and we started fresh for our new units and the work we have completed thus far! We ended the day with gym before completing agendas and heading off to kiss and ride!

Important Reminders:

  • Reading Comprehension due Monday! As I mentioned in interviews I am re-testing students next week and completing reading comprehension work really has helped students progress! (to help you can ask prompting questions throughout reading and encourage students to reflect on what they have read!)
  • Math and spelling tests signed and returned for Monday
  • Toy and food drive
  • Afterschool activities and lunch forms due
  • Re-registration packages were sent home! Get yours in as soon as possible to ensure your spot! :)

Thursday 8 December 2016

Happy Thursday Parents!

We had a wonderful (and busy!) day here in third grade! We began the day with our math test on number sense and numeration, the students all worked really hard at completing the test with their best effort and were reminded to read each question over and check their response! Most of the errors made on tests are simple counting errors!

After our test we took a quick brain break and marched around the school like soldiers, when we came back in we were more focused and ready for language! Our next focus in language will be letter writing, specifically reporting through letter writing. Students completed the OWA pre-assessment today so that I can gauge their understanding and steer the lessons in a way that meets their needs.

After language, lunch, and recess, students completed a special adjectives task! They all drew themselves on a sheet of paper and the whole class wrote down an adjective to describe that person on their sheet! We ended up with some beautiful, and meaningful pieces of work that show how much our class cares for one-another and how special each person is!

Afterward we watched a video on forces and motion filled with many different visual experiments for the students to learn more of terminology! Students also completed a worksheet to go along with the video!

We ended the day with music, and gym before agendas and heading off to kiss and ride!
Important Reminders:
  • ·         Spelling Test tomorrow (lesson 13)
  • ·         Toy and food drive is still being held.
  • ·         Lunch and afterschool activity forms and fees due
  • ·         Re-registration packages were sent home! Please sent them back to reserve your spot at SJA!! J
  • ·         Read 25 minutes (our reading challenge is going really well we have some really good readers in our class who are close to winning a prize!).

I am looking forward to seeing each and every one of you at interview time!
