Happy Tueaday Parents!

We had a great day in grade 3! Unfortunately my laptop is malfunctioning so pictures will be posted as soon as it is up and running! We began our day today with Math where we began our new unit on motion geometry! We started by discussing grids and maps and I demonstrated how to use a grid to get to different locations! We then had a super fun scavenger hunt, where students followed directions in order to find a secret classroom location and claim ire prize! They had so much fun!

In language we worked on cause and effect relationships in books. We discussed the difference between cause and effect and en we came up with some amazing examples! The class en made paper chains out of cause and effect stories using different colours for thier causes and thier effects! They came up with so,e pretty creative stories!

After lunch, recess, and French, we came back and discussed the differences between needs and wants for our UOI unit. Some students made great connections stating that the rural areas need the city areas and vice versa! The class then worked in groups to decide if differ met items were needs or wants and then ranked the items in order of importance!

The end of the day was very exciting! We had our month end assembly which was a new experience for our new students! Congratulations to Emaan who won the risk-taker award for joining choir and getting involved during her first month at SJA!! We played a very fun house game before heading off to kiss and ride!

Happy Monday Parents!
We had a busy day here in Grade 3! We began our day with our math pre-test for our next unit on motion geometry! It was very interesting to see that many friends already knew so much about geometry and it will be great going into our next unit!

After math we worked on language where we learned about possessive pronouns, we began by going over what pronouns are (words that take the place of a noun), and then we learned about possessive pronouns by talking about what possession means. Students worked in pairs to complete task cards around the room and choose the correct possessive pronoun to complete a sentence.

After lunch, recess, and French we worked on UOI where we looked at the different between urban and rural areas! As a class we completed a Venn Diagram showing our understanding of Urban/Rural communities, their similarities and their differences. Students then completed their own digram on their own!

After second lunch and recess we ended the day with music and gym before completing agendas and heading off to kiss and ride.

Important Reminders:
  • Grammar Homework from writers book page 93 possessive pronouns.
  • UOI Venn Diagram Comparing Urban vs. Rural Areas (at least 3 pictures/words are needed in the two sides and two of each in the middle)
  • Spelling Lesson 16 test on Friday
  • Re-Registration Packages

Happy Weekend Parents!

I hope you are all relaxing on this fine Sunday! On Friday we had a very busy day in Grade 3! We began our day with our Measurement Math Test. The students worked VERY hard to answer some pretty tricky questions! We had some students away on Friday and I will mark and return all tests after everyone has completed theirs.

In language we worked on identifying main ideas and supporting details from a non-fiction text.  Students were required to read a text and underline the main idea and supporting details in different colours and then write out both in a graphic organizer. This activity was to help them practice for their reading comprehension homework and develop essential reading skills! Students were sent home non-fiction texts this weekend for reading comprehension!

After lunch and recess we had UOI where we began our new unit called "Country Mouse City Mouse" students seemed really excited about our new unit where we will learn about and develop a deeper understanding of the organization within a country versus a city. We began the unit by reading "Town Mouse, City Mouse", and "From Here to There" that compare the city versus the country. The class then used the new books in the classroom to develop an "I wonder..." statement and "I know. and I want to know" for our UOI board.

We ended the day with a few more Forces and Motion presentations before gym, completing agendas and heading off to kiss and ride!

Important Reminders:

  • Sign and return Spelling Test
  • Reading Comprehension (the task was to read the non-fiction book and identify the main idea/three supporting details) There is a small half paper located in journals detailing the assignment.
  • Re-registration is upon us! Re-registrations forms have been sent home. The deadline to re-register is February 10. After that we open up spaces to the public. Do not delay – reserve your spot for grade 4 today!
  • Sign and Return UOI test for those who have not returned theirs!
Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Happy Thursday!

We had a great day in Grade 3! We began the morning by sharing stories about how year ahead day went and our favourite moment from grade 4 yesterday! We then had our second review day in class, we worked on money, capacity, and mass today in class. We worked together on questions as a class and then individually worked on questions as well. The math test is tomorrow and will cover calendars, time, temperature, money, capacity, and mass.

In language we learned about writing an informational letter-with a focus on effective brainstorming. We learned about perspective, and thinking about how the reader of your letter is feeling while reading. We then began brainstorming for the topic, "you are inviting a friend over for a sleepover" students had to brainstorm important rules and routines at their house and think about how their friend would be feeling.

After lunch, recess, and french, we spent time doing some more forces and motion presentations, they really are fantastic and it is amazing to see the enthusiasm coming from the students as they explain something they are knowledgeable about, and really enjoyed making.

During second recess I held a study session for students who have been feeling uncomfortable with some concepts from our math unit in order to help them feel more confident. We focused on time and money during this time and those who chose to stay in were very responsible in seeking additional help!

We ended the day with music, and gym before completing agendas and heading off to kiss and ride.

We had such a fantastic Year Ahead Day today!

(My grade 3’s please see the end of the blog post for important information, for the rest of the week
and see Mrs. Hocevar’s blog to see what our class did today in grade 4!)

The Grade 3’s-to-be began their day with a morning meeting! We started by saying good morning to everyone in the class and then we had a temperature reading “how are you feeling on a scale of 1-5” some students like to say super big numbers or even words to describe how they are feeling! It is good to be reflective and for me to gain an understanding of how the class is feeling each day!

For math we played addition bingo where the class was required to add numbers and cover the sums on their cards until someone got a bingo! We had some volunteers who were reading out the addition facts and others who were playing! Winners received house points! We also played addition baseball in teams, the class was in teams and were required to add two numbers and tap the correct answer on the board before the other team! It was so much fun and we had such good sports who encouraged their classmates!

For language we brainstormed different adjectives, nouns, and verbs, then we put different ones in a bucket and played charades with all of the different words we came up with! The class was so open to playing and acting in front of each other!

The class had lunch and recess with the older kids like they will next year! It was great for them to get used to the different schedule!

After lunch and recess the class went to French with Mme. Stella! When they came back we watched a short video to learn about pushes versus pulls in the grade 3 UOI forces and motion unit! We then had a push and pull scavenger hunt! In pairs the students found different things that you push or pull around the room! We then had a fun activity where students could try pushing and pulling a partner on a scooter to see how pushing vs. pulling feels.

After second lunch and recess the class came back and we did a very special activity. We wrote letters to ourselves for us to open on the first day of grade 3! We made goals, and wrote about our feelings, and I added something extra special to help the class feel excited on their first day of grade 3!
We ended the day with gym before packing up and heading to kiss and ride!

Overall it was a fantastic day and I am so excited for next year for all of the amazing grade 2’s to become amazing grade 3’s!

Happy Tuesday Parents!

We had a busy day here in third grade! We began our day with math review; we focussed on the key concept of time, temperature, and calendars! We had a review with the whole class and completed a bunch of practice problems to help the class prepare for their test on Friday!

For language we spoke about finding the main idea in the story and finding the details that support that idea! We read a story as a class and practice d identifying the main idea together and finding the supporting details, the class then had the chance read another story and find the main ideas and supporting details on their own.

After lunch, recess, and French the class came back and completed the forces and motion quiz! They all seemed very prepared for the quiz after completing the review that was sent home yesterday! It is amazing to see how much they have learned (and I have learned with them!).
After second lunch and recess the class had music and gym before completing agendas and heading off to kiss and ride!

Important Reminders:
  • Math test on Friday (review was sent home yesterday to be completed before test day)

Happy Monday Parents!

We had a great day here in grade 3! We began our day with learning about grams and kilograms to measure mass! The students had the opportunity to feel 1g chips and think about 1000 of those in one kg! This was our last lesson for this unit and our test will be on Friday. I have sent home a review package for the students to complete throughout the week and we will have 2 full review periods before our test!

In language we learned about adverbs! We worked on adding in adverbs into sentences to see how they can change their meaning! For example: “The boy slowly ate his dinner before heading up to bed.”, or “The boy excitedly ate his dinner before heading up to bed.” The class came up with some amazing and creative adverbs to use in example sentences! We then played a quick game of adverb charades which was a lot of fun and each student had the opportunity to act! We finished the lesson by completing some work in our writer’s notebooks!

After lunch, recess, and French we came back to class and the students were given 15 minutes to practice for their summative presentations. We then formed an audience and students presented their forces and motion projects! It is amazing to see all of their learning, and how excited they are to share their projects with the class! We will continue to have presentations tomorrow.

After second lunch and recess we had a few more presentations before completing agendas and some housekeeping items before gym, then heading off to kiss and ride!

Saturday 21 January 2017

Hello Parents! I hope you are all having a wonderful weekend!

We began our day yesterday learning and exploring capacity. We learned about the liter and the milliliter. We were able to use some containers to see how the same amount of fluid can fit into differently shaped containers. We made predictions and watched as two 500mL jars can be combined to make 1000mL or a whole liter! The class loved watching the colours change as we mixed and it really allowed them to visualize the sizes of the jars!

In language the students worked on International-mindedness day work and then they presented everything each group had learned to the class. It was very interesting to see all of their learning!

After lunch and recess we set up our Egypt stand in the auditorium before the class headed to french. When we came back the students were provided time to finish practicing for their summative presentations on Monday. They have been working so hard and I am so excited to see their presentations!

We ended the day with International-Mindedness Day! I want to thank you all for your amazing contributions to our stand whether that be food, artifacts from the country, or bringing in research for the students. We couldn't have learned so much about Egypt without all of your help! I am so thankful for all of you!

Important Reminders:
  • Math homework page 128-131
  • Reading comprehension-reading a book and responding in journal to the following question- what do you think the author is trying to tell you/why? OR what do you think the moral of the story is/why? (1/2 a page to a full page)
  • Re-registration packages due asap! They can be turned into the front desk or brought in with students, it is very important that you submit forms before the deadline to ensure your spot before they open up to the public! :)
  • Year ahead day is on Wednesday this week! I know the class is very excited to try grade 4 for the day with Mrs. Hocevar! Please remember that this day is about having fun and getting excited for next year-the teacher your child has for year-ahead day does not necessarily determine who they have for next year!

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Hello Parents and Happy Thursday!

We began our day with learning about measuring temperature! The students already have an amazing background knowledge of temperature which really helped them complete the task card challenge reading thermometers around the room!

After math we spent time working on our International-Mindedness day poster and display! The students completed their good copies to be posted on the board and made a number of decorations! They are so excited for tomorrow and I cant wait to show off all of their hard work.

After lunch and recess, and french we worked on summative assignments, students are working on explaining how their creations/projects show different forces and motions! We discussed what was necessary in order to get a level 4 and the students are well on their way to meeting that goal!

After second lunch and recess we worked more on summative assignments before gym and completing agendas before kiss and ride!

Important Reminders

  • Math homework page 118-119 (temperature)

Wednesday 18 January 2017

Hello Parents! Happy Wednesday!

We began our day today with math where we covered a very tricky topic! We discussed “counting on” which is a strategy that some people use to count change. You begin at the cost of the item and count on until you reach the amount that was given to you. For example:

Some of the students had a hard time grasping this concept and I spent one-on-one time on the carpet with manipulatives in order to give those students extra practice.

For language we continued to work on writing our good copies for our Egypt display! I am so excited to see the students being so inquisitive and curious. They are asking so many questions and being incredibly open-minded! I am so excited for parents to see all of their hard work! As a reminder international-mindedness day is this Friday! As a result kiss and ride is cancelled and parents are welcome to join us in the auditorium to see all of the displays at 2:45!

After lunch and recess and French we had time to work on our summative projects! The students are working on writing out their explanations for how their project demonstrates forces and motion! Some students are still working on building their projects and being wonderful problem solvers and thinkers throughout this process!
After second lunch and recess we finished the day with Music and Gym before Agendas and heading off to kiss and ride.

Important Reminders:
  • ·         Math Page 126-127
  • ·         Procedure must be completed at home for summative (some students are falling a little bit behind)
  • ·         International-Mindedness Day (wear Egyptian colours, red, white, black, and gold or unitform. It is not casual day!) Parents are also welcome to bring in traditional Egyptian food items that are nut-free for international-day
  • ·         Re-registration packages

Have a wonderful night!

Tuesday 17 January 2017

Happy Tuesday Parents!

We had another great day here in third grade! We began our day with a make-believe store set up in our classroom! The students purchased items around the room with a partner, they had $50.00 dollars to spend and were responsible to choosing items that made the most sense to get the most amount of items for their money! They really loved the real-world example and it lead right into out next exciting event today! We went to Mrs. Smiths class to purchase items from her store! The proceeds went to Sick Kids hospital and the classes got to experience real-life math in action!

In language the class continued to research their particular topic for international-mindedness day! We have done some fantastic work and it is wonderful to see how interested all of the students are!

After lunch, recess, and French the students came back and they began to word on their summative assignments! Most of them are beginning their building stage and they are all coming along really nicely!

After second lunch and recess we spent more time on summatives before gym and agendas and kiss and ride!

Important Reminders:

  • Math homework page 124-125
  • Read 25 minutes
  • Any information for summatives and Egypt still needed please bring in.
  • Re-registration forms
  • Year Ahead day!
    • SJA is excited to announce that Year Ahead Day is happening again this year!  All SJA PYP students will be participating in this exciting event on Wednesday, January 25th.   Year Ahead Day is a fun and interactive day for the students at SJA to spend a day in the class of the grade level ahead of them (example: SK students spend their day as Grade 1 students, Grade 6 students spend their day as Grade 7 students, etc.).  This is a great way for the students at SJA to get a glimpse into their future life at SJA!  Students can get to know the teachers, see their future classroom, and take part in activities they will be participating in next year. Please know that the teacher that is assigned for your child does not mean this will be your child's classroom teacher next year.

Our class will be heading to Mrs. Hocevars room!

Monday 16 January 2017

Happy Monday Parents!

We had a fantastic day here in third grade! We began with math centers this morning where the students were required to add money together, make the same amount using different coins, and problem solve!

After math we worked on our International-Mindedness Day research. The students chose a partner and then were provided a topic that interested them! They used the tablets and the books on Egypt in the class to begin becoming the experts on their topic! I have asked them to look up some more information tonight at home if they have time! Also if parents would like you are more than welcome to send Egyptian foods to school on Friday for International-Mindedness day that are nut-free to share with the school!

After lunch, recess, and french we had UOI where students began planning for their summative assignments. They wrote out the materials and the process for their project and students who finished will begin building tomorrow!

We finished the day with Music and Gym before completing agendas and heading off to kiss and ride!

 Important Information:

  • Math Homework Page 122-123
  • Please see Below:

Forces and Motion Summative:
Tomorrow we will be working hard on our summative projects for our forces and motion unit! As clarification the students are responsible for creating ONE project that demonstrates their knowledge of more than one force. For example a windmill not only demonstrates a push force, but also shows how forces influence speed. I have asked students to bring in the procedure (printed from the internet) for tomorrow as we will begin building tomorrow and some students can’t remember from their heads how to build their chosen project.
International Day:
Tomorrow we will also be working on researching our country more. Each student has been provided a more specific topic that they are responsible for with a partner. They are to become the expert on their chosen topic to use for our presentation/poster. The students are required to go home tonight and print off any of the material that they need for tomorrow (they should know their own topics) we do have access to books and tablets tomorrow but any additional material would be great (the internet here isn’t fantastic for researching).
International-Mindedness Day will take place on Friday, parents are welcome to come to the school at 2:30 until 3:15. There will be no kiss and ride this day.
Re-registration Packages:
I have only received a few re-registration packages from students, please get them in as soon as possible to ensure that you are reenrolled for next year!
Sick Kid’s Fundraiser for the Grade 1’s
The grade 1’s are having a healthy food store tomorrow as part of their organization unit! Please send students with money to purchase fresh fruit, granola bars, juice, and other healthy snacks! All proceeds are being donated to Sick Kids Hospital.
