Happy Friday Parents!

We had a busy day here in 3rd grade! We began our day with an assembly where the Inquirer awards were given out for each class. In our class we held a vote where the students wrote down the name of the person who is an Inquirer. Our class decided on Shane! Shane is both curious and inquisitive; he frequently asks critical questions that go above and beyond what is happening in class. After the awards we participated in a yoga house game!

After the game we came back to class and the students worked on some word problems in math. They do have homework tonight as I decided to focus more attention on addition and subtraction skills instead of math games this week in preparation for their upcoming math test at the end of next week.

After math we had language where all students completed the spelling test and then worked on quotation mark work. I have sent home the spelling tests and really appreciate them coming back signed by parents to ensure that they have been seen.

In UOI we have begun working on the safety portion of our Manners and Safety unit. The students were given an emergency survival scenario, and asked to rant items that they had in order of importance in order to survive. The students were lost in the woods with a series of items ranging from matches to chocolate bars, and worked together in groups to come up with how they would handle this situation. Groups were then asked to justify their opinions to the class and then reflected on what was the most difficult part of this scenario. The answers to the most important items varied, some groups claimed that having walkie talkies was the most important, and one decided that water was the most important. Afterward we discussed the importance of being good communicators, being a good friend in emergency situations, looking out for one another and being responsible. This scenario was a lot of fun for the class but it also stressed the importance of knowing what to do in emergencies and staying safe.

After lunch and recess we continued with our UOI presentation for Manners Around the World. I am so proud of all of the work that the class has accomplished and the creativity that the put into their assignments. These presentations were very well done, and I am so happy that all of the students felt comfortable at the front of the room presenting to the class. The videos of the presentations will be posted shortly so you can see your children in action and all of their hard work!
We finished the day with Gym and agendas before heading off to kiss and ride!

Important reminders:
  • ·         Math homework on page 50 and 51 in the Math Homework book
  • ·         Please sign and return spelling test
  • ·         Read 25 minutes per night and log in log book.
  • ·         I have sent an email to parents regarding a Self-Study survey for parents
  • ·         I have also sent home information on the Summative assignment for our Manners and Safety UOI
  • ·         I have also sent home an invitation to the Movie Night and Dance put on by the Parent Guild at St. Jude’s. Macaroni Quotation Marks!

The Whole Class After the Terry Fox Run!

Happy Thursday Parents!

We had a very interactive day here in grade 3! We began our day with math where we worked on subtracting 3 digit numbers requiring borrowing. The students worked incredibly well and I am hoping that with more practice we will all become experts.

After math we participated in the Terry Fox run which was held in the auditorium due to weather, the students were very excited to participate and we walked for the entire half hour! Each student received a sticker on which they could write who they are running/walking for today. Many students included loved ones, all people with cancer, and some decided that they were running for Terry Fox.

For language we worked on proper use of quotation marks, the students were provided sentence strips and macaroni noodles to place the quotations marks and commas in the correct place. Quotation marks can be a little tricky so we will be spending more time on this especially in our story writing unit. The class loves working with manipulatives to demonstrate their understanding of concepts.

After lunch, recess, and French, we learned more about Terry Fox, who he was, what he did, and why he did it. We related it to our current UOI unit by reading a story about Terry and his friend Rick and discussing how Terry and Rick were friends, their responsibilities as friends, and how they made a difference in the lives of others. The students were incredibly curious about Terry Fox and cancer in general. They asked many thought-provoking questions and were very interested in learning more.

Afterward we talked about what a friend is, the class then took their thinking and created cards that show what being a friend means to them. This was a nice way to conceptualize our learning about what a true friend is.

After recess and second lunch the class had music and gym, after which we came back and finished our agendas before heading to kiss and ride.
We did not have time today to finish our Manners Around the World presentations which will be done tomorrow and posted tomorrow for you to watch your amazing children in action!

Important Reminders:
  • ·         Math homework page 48 and 49 in the homework book.
  • ·         Read 25 minutes per night
  • ·         Please send back reading log tomorrow.
  • ·         Spelling test tomorrow and spelling work due tomorrow.
  • ·         Last day for October lunch orders is tomorrow.
  • ·         Last day for book orders is tomorrow.

Have a wonderful night!

Happy Wednesday Parents!

We are halfway through the week! We began our day with math; we focussed on adding three-digit numbers today. The children seemed to be able to do this very well. The only thing that we have to remember is to line up the numbers properly according to place value.

In language continued working on contractions. The class is great at turning two words into one word with an apostrophe, and they came up with some wonderful sentences using contractions in them. I see their writing and grammar improving every day!

In UOI we continued our lesson on Manners Around the World, the students finished their group work and developed presentations (complete with lots of actions!) which they practiced until French.

After French, recess and lunch the students presented their Manners Around the World countries. Some of our students need to present tomorrow as we ran out of time. The presentations I have seen so far have been amazing! The whole class has been participating and having fun learning about other countries! I will post videos tomorrow when all of the presentations have finished.
The students finished the day with gym and agendas before kiss and ride!

Important Reminders:
-Tomorrow is the Terry Fox run, please send you child to school in their gym uniform as we are running right in the morning.
-Math homework in the math book page 46/47, this homework is very short and should be able to be completed independently.
-The bake sale has been extended! Tomorrow at lunch and recess treats will be sold in the cafeteria!
-Read 25 minutes per night and log in the log book.
-Please sign and return table manners quiz
-Spelling test is on Friday, please keep practicing those spelling words and complete the spelling work before Friday!
-Lunch forms for October are due on Friday.

Have a wonderful night!

Good afternoon Parents!

Today has been a great day in grade 3 filled with hard workers and lots of participation!
We began with math and worked on rounding-first and front-end estimation. The students seemed to be doing well with this in class and had (a pretty lengthy!) page to complete to practice their skills. Those that finished the sheet in class do not have math homework tonight, those that did not have been sent home the sheet to work on for homework.

As a reminder for parents:
Rounding-First: We round to the nearest 10 or 100 (we have been mainly doing to the nearest 100 thus far). If the number ends in 5 or 50 we round up: for example, 150 would round to 200.
Front-End Estimation: We use the number in the 100’s or 10’s column and ignore the rest (the rest turns to 0’s). For example, 521 would round to 500, or 588 would round to 500, 88 would round to 80.

You must first round and then add or subtract to get your estimated sum or difference.
After math we were working on contractions (words that combine two words with an apostrophe, ex. we would= we’d). To illustrate this we made “foldable contractions” which show the full two words when opened and when folded show the contraction. The students then used contractions in a sentence. They all seemed really excited to make these and they will be sent home after we are finished with contractions for parents to see!

After lunch, recess, and French, we worked on UOI, we began by talking about respect, open-mindedness, and curiosity. We spoke about how even though people may be from the same place they may have very different lifestyles and traditions which is alright and should be respected. This was a precursor to our “Manners Around the World” activity where students are investigating a certain country and exploring their customs, traditions, and way of life. This is to have them understand and be open-minded with the hopes of creating internationally-minded individuals. The students were very curious, and we will be working on this again in class tomorrow.

After second lunch and recess we had music and gym before coming back to the class to do agendas!

Important reminders:
-Tomorrow is casual day, if you have not yet paid for your child to participate please send them in with the fee tomorrow for them to be able to wear casual dress tomorrow!
-Math homework page if it was not completed in class is due tomorrow.
-Spelling work is due Friday
-Read for 25 minutes each night and log in logbook
-Terry Fox pledges are due on Friday
-Bake sale is being held again tomorrow!
-People are losing both toys and uniform pieces. Please make sure that your child’s uniform is labelled, and also remind them that if a toy comes to school it is their responsibility.

Have a wonderful evening!

Kung-Fu Punctuation!

Happy Monday Parents!

We had a busy day in Grade 3! We began with math and learned about rounding! We are going to spend more time on this in class, so if your child has a difficult time on the homework tonight please do not be concerned as we will work on it some more as a class.

After math we learned a cool way to remember/reinforce our knowledge of proper punctuation use! Kung-Fu punctuation was a really fun way to learn when to use proper punctuation. I will upload a video shortly to show you all of our hard work!

We then had our table setting quiz, thank you for preparing the students this weekend and having them practice at home.

Practicing Our Table Manners!

First the students tried to set their place settings based on prior knowledge-it was great to see the variety in their thought processes!

Adn was the first to come up with the proper informal table setting in class!

Eventually all of the students had proper table settings!

We then had a snack and talked about our dinner traditions at home! It was so fun to learn all about each one of our classmates family and cultural traditions!

Happy Friday Parents!

We began our day today with Math, where we worked on our adding and subtracting 2-digit numbers using mental math in the form of a game.

We then had our spelling test and all of the students did really well!
Afterward we bound our friendship stories together in the form of a book-I am very excited to send these home, I just need to assess them first!

After Language, recess, lunch, and French, the students came back and we worked on proper table setting as part of our UOI unit on manners. We began by discussing proper table etiquette, and then we each got the chance to “set the table” properly. This was very inquiry-based, the students used their prior knowledge to try and set the table correctly. We then enjoyed a little snack together as a class while demonstrating proper table manners, we discussed different cultural traditions, and where our families come from during this time while enjoying our snack. It was very interesting as a teacher to have the students teach me all about their traditions they have at home for eating!

We then had music and finished the day with reading buddies. I am so proud of all of the students and their willingness to act as role models for the younger students. They really enjoy this time with them and show their maturity in this setting!

Homework/Important Reminders:
  • ·         Math Inquiry Question due Monday
  • ·         Practice Table setting at home, and proper table etiquette
  • ·         Sign spelling test and return on Monday
  • ·         Terry Fox pledges
  • ·         Read 25 min per night and log in the reading log book (these are collected every Friday for review)

Happy Thursday Parents!

We began our day today with Math, where the students were working on using mental math to subtract two-digit numbers. I am so proud of all of the homework that the grade 3’s have been completing and turning in. Thank you so much for your dedication in ensuring your child gets done the homework.

Next we worked on our friendship stories. As part of the IB program, we believe it is essential to encourage our students to reflect on experiences; as a result today we reflected on our friendship stories. First we peer-reviewed another friends work, and then completed a self-reflection. The students were great at being both honest and fair with their classmate, and themselves.

After French we worked on role-playing bullying scenarios as part of our UOI unit on friendship the students were so great at coming up with proper solutions to problems they may encounter with bullies on the playground or at school!

Before going home the students had time to do daily 5, or work on any work that they hadn’t completed.

Important Reminders:

-Math homework pages 42 and 43
-Spelling test tomorrow and spelling work for lesson 2 due tomorrow. Please have your child practice the spelling words for tomorrows test.

Wednesday 21 September 2016

Happy Wednesday Parents!

Today has been a great day here in Grade 3! We worked really hard this morning on our math work and every student finished all of the textbook questions!

We then worked on finishing our friendship stories, the students learned that all narrative stories teach a lesson or have a moral. To finish their stories they thought about what they wanted to teach their readers. We have some amazing stories coming along!

If the students did not finish the conclusion to their friendship stories, or were working on writing a good copy of their story they could have extra homework tonight. Please have them complete this neatly as we are going to be creating story books out of our stories.

After recess and lunch we worked on creating a “bullying banner” we talked about our responsibility as friends and what we can do to stop bullying from happening. We then created individual posters which will be put up in the hallway along with the other grade three’s to create a banner at St. Jude’s showing our support for Anti-Bulling and to raise awareness.

After second recess the class had music and gym. We ended the day with agendas before kiss and ride.

Important information:
-Math homework on page 40 and 41, your child should be able to complete this individually.
-Spelling work due on Friday.
-Read 20 minutes per night and log in log book, send log book back on Friday for a check.
-some students have friendship story homework.
-Terry fox pledge forms due Sept 29th/2016.

Tuesday 20 September 2016

Happy Tuesday Parents!

We had a great day here in Grade 3, we began our day with Math where we used manipulatives (base ten blocks) to practice adding and subtracting 2-digit numbers! We then moved onto Language where the students worked on their Friendship Stories and have introduced the main problem into their story,

After recess and lunch the students had French. When they came back we had a very eventful and interactive lesson on bullying. We began by reading a story together as a class and then participated in the toothpaste activity. The students had to squeeze out all of the toothpaste from a bottle and try to get it back in with a toothpick. This was to symbolise the effect of bullying on a person’s feelings, and that once mean words are spoken they cannot be taken back.

We had some amazing discussions during this inquiry activity, some of the amazing comments from classmates include:

“we are responsible for making friends and keeping them”

“we are responsible for making sure no one is a bully:

“it is hard to make people feel better but is its easy to make them feel bad” (speaking to the idea of apologizing and being kind after being hurtful).

“whatever we promise to do we have to actually do”

Next we worked on creating an “Anti-bullying” contract for our class, which we came up with together and signed to show that we will act as responsible individuals and we respectful and kind to others.

After lunch and recess we worked on our narrative skills by journaling about a real or made up dream or nightmare we had.
We finished the day with gym!

Homework:
  • ·         Math Page 38/39 in Workbook
  • ·         Continue spelling lesson 2 before Friday.
  • ·         Read 20 minutes per night and log.
  • ·         UOI Friendship Stories should be done up until the problem is introduced.

Here are some pictures from our day!

Thank you,
Have a wonderful night,

Ms. Glover
