Happy Wednesday Parents!!

We had a busy day here in Grade 3! We began our day with math where we focused on Math Review for our Probability unit, which surprisingly we have finished!! It was a short unit and we will have a quiz on Monday morning! It was a very short unit and I am sure the class will have no problem!

For language we spent time working on our Arts Night performance I am so excited with what the class has accomplished so far and I cant wait for all of you to see it!

Today Himmat showed us an amazing slide show that he had prepared to convince Mr. Sawatsky to get rid of uniforms! It was an amazing presentation that the class loved and he clearly made use of all of the components of persuasive writing that we have talked about!

After lunch, recess, and French, we spent time working on UOI summatives, students are working incredibly well and they are very excited about their inquiry topics! I cant wait to see their final assignments which are due next Thursday.

After second lunch and recess we had time to read more of The Secret Garden! I am so happy with how excited the students have gotten with the book and interested into the events and mysteries!

We ended the day with gym and agendas before heading off to kiss and ride!

Important Information:

  • Math Review will be sent home tomorrow for quiz no math homework tonight

Happy Tuesday Parents!

I was happy to be back in the classroom today! We began our day with math where we learned about fair versus unfair games. Students played some games and defined what it meant to be fair (having equal chances or a probability that is equally likely). I noticed after marking homework last night that students didn't use fractions or numbers to describe the probability of events. (example rolling an odd number on a die has 3/6 probability of being chosen because there are 6 possible options and 3 odd numbers). I went over this concept again with the class of using numbers to describe probability and I have asked them to correct their homework if there is a sticky note on that page- reassure them that it is alright as I wasn't here yesterday to explain their expectations. I will be checking it again tomorrow.

In language we read our Persuasive Speeches on No Uniforms to a friend in the class. We then practiced how to critique by specifically saying something we liked about the speech and one thing we thought could be improved.

After lunch, recess, and French the class was provided with more time to work on their Summative Assignments. As students work on their planners for this assignment and finish them they will begin the final copy (should it be a brochure, poster, diorama etc) students will need to bring in materials to build their project or poster board etc., as they reach those stages.

After second lunch and recess we ended the day with music and gym before completing agendas and heading off to kiss and ride.

Important Information:

  • Corrections to 192-193
  • Math Page 194-195
  • Spelling Due Thursday
  • Spelling Test Friday
  • Casual Day tomorrow
  • Bake sale tomorrow

Ms. Glover was sick today! :(

Hello Parents and Happy Monday!

I was off ill today but missed all of my amazing kiddies so much! I was in contact with the teachers who covered for me and I heard on numerous occasions how well behaved they were! I am so proud of them!

In math today the students learned about relating fractions to probability and how we can use our knowledge of fractions to explain the chances of an event happening. Here is an example:

This is a bag of marbles. If I wanted to explain the probability of pulling out a blue marble I would say that I have a 5/12 chance (or 5 in 12 chance) of pulling out a blue marble. If I wanted to explain the probability of pulling out a green marble I would say I have a 1/12 (a 1 in 12 chance) of pulling out a green marble. There is a higher probability of me pulling out a blue marble versus a green marble.

In language students were provided with time to work on our Arts Night performance. I have emailed some pictures for reference for costumes. I have also attached some below:

Happy Weekend Parents!

I hope you are all relaxing and enjoying some time off! Yesterday we had a great day in Grade 3! Many of our students were away due to track and we missed them so much! We began our day with math games on the tablets (the students always love the tablets!).

We then had time in music with all of the grade 3's together!

After lunch, recess, and French we spent time working on our Persuasive speeches and then the class had time in-class to work on reading comprehension work with a leveled reader.

After second lunch and recess we had our spelling test before working on some mindfulness activities. Students learned what is meant by having a fixed mindset (I cant do this attitude) versus a growth mindset (I can do anything attitude). We had some roll playing activities where students learned to translate their automatic fixed responses into a growth mindset attitude. I am hoping as they transition into Grade 4 next year they will all remember how incredibly capable they are and remain the confident students that they have become.

We ended the day with a dance party when our track friends got back before agendas and kiss and ride!

Important Information:

  • Math worksheet sent home
  • Information for June Aftercare sent home
  • Sign and Return Spelling Test
  • Summative Information (topic and inquiry research done for Monday)

Happy Thursday Parents!

We had a wonderful and exciting day in grade 3! We began our day with Math where we learned about conducting experiments. We discussed probability again, and then talked about making predictions on how probable something is. We conducted some experiments and and made predictions. For example if we flipped a coin 20 times, we predicted that it would land on heads about 10 times because it has equal chance to land on either tales or heads.

In language we spent more time working on our persuasive speeches! We discussed the success criteria again and students wrote it in the back of their journals to ensure that over the weekend as they write their rough draft they can refer to the success criteria.

After lunch, recess, and French we had our Mad Science workshop! Students used their knowledge of plants to participate actively in the workshop! They were able to look at microscopes, watch as celery changed colours, and participate in many more activities! I took many pictures that will be posted shortly!

Important Reminders:

  • Math 190-191
  • Maples Track and Field tomorrow for some students (email was sent to parents regarding this event)
  • Persuasive Speech due Monday (sent with students who will be away tomorrow)
  • Summative assignment information sent home with rubric (some components due for Monday)

Have a wonderful evening!

Our annual Art's Night is only two weeks away!! Please join us on Wednesday, June 7 at 7:00 PM. You may also join us at our dress rehearsal which begins at 1:00 PM. Our theme this year is Music Through The Eras! You are in for a fantastic night of art, dance, and song! We are asking that students be at the school 6:30 to get ready. We will also be selling treats and baked goods, so get ready for what is sure to be a wonderful evening.

Happy Wednesday Parents!

We had another wonderful day in grade 3! We began our day by starting our new math unit on probability! We learned to use terms like possible, impossible, certain, likely, unlikely, and equally likely to describe events or situations! (it's our last math unit!)

In language time we worked on Arts Night practice and we have finalized all of our dance moves. I am so excited for parents to see the amazing work the grade 3's have done with this dance!

After lunch, recess, and French we came back to class and learned about a very interesting new concept in our plants and soil unit: photosynthesis! Students watched a video to explain photosynthesis and then we read a comic. We learned that carbon dioxide, water, and sunlight go into a plant and in return plants make sugar and oxygen for us! The class spent time making leaf diagrams to show their understanding of photosynthesis!

After second lunch and recess we ended the day with music and gym before heading off to kiss and ride!

Important Reminders:

  • Math Homework 188-189
  • Spelling Lesson 29 due Friday
  • Tomorrow is our Mad Science workshop! We will be having our workshop in the afternoon, it is at the school so it doesn't change any of our daily scheduling.
  • Read 25 minutes
  • A note for our Maples Track participants: Students attending The Maples Track trip on Friday must be at school before 8am ready to go in their gym clothes with a bagged lunch as they will be at The Maples all day. Please have students dress for the weather and bring a water bottle as well!

Tuesday 23 May 2017

Happy Tuesday Parents!

I hope you all had a fantastic and relaxing long weekend! We began our day today with our Geometry Unit test where students were assessed on their knowledge and understanding of key concepts related to shapes and angles.

In language we worked on translating our persuasive writing organizers (OREO) into speech format. As a class we wrote a speech about having no more uniforms at St. Jude's. We were careful to consider the perspective of other people including parents, teachers, and students. Now the class is working on their own persuasive speech.

After lunch, recess, and French we learned about nutrients that live in the soil. The class read a short informative package and answered comprehension questions to demonstrate their understanding of how soil holds nutrients and provides nutrients to plants. We learned about Potassium, Nitrogen, and Phosphorus.

We even had time today for some action stars! Emana brought in a book about a seed and read it to the class! Krina dyed a flower at home and brought it in to show how the stem can soak up colours from food colouring into its petals, and Emaan and Iqra are starting a campaign to educate SJA on poor people in Africa! Wow way to go grade 3's!

After second lunch and recess we spent some time reading The Secret Garden. The class is really enjoying the mysteries surrounding the novel! They have been sent home a comprehension package to complete to assess their knowledge and understanding of read material so far. Students are to complete page 2.

We ended the day with gym and agendas before heading off to kiss and ride.

Important Reminders:

  • The Secret Garden Reading Comp page 2
  • Read 25 minutes

Afterwards we headed back to class for math review. But first the class had a surprise for Emaan, whose 8th birthday was yesterday!

In Math I went over each concepts students will need to know for the test on Tuesday in great detail and I feel like the students are well-prepared for the test! They have also taken home another review package to complete over the weekend!

In language we read more of The Secret Garden, the students are really enjoying the mysteries surrounding and we are learning so much!

After second lunch, recess, and French we had a very interesting UOI lesson on parts of a flower and the lifecyle of a flower, students then labelled a diagram and drew the lifecycle process to show their understanding.

We ended the day with music and gym before agendas and heading off to kiss and ride!

Important Reminders:

  • Math Review Package Sent home-Test Tuesday
