Happy Halloween Parents!
Today we had a very fun and exciting day in grade 3! We began with math where we threw bean bag and measured the distance in meters, we also bowled with ghost pins and pumpkins for balls. In language we wrote our spelling words in our agendas and then played some fun drama games like “Darling I love you wont you please smile?” and charades.

After lunch, recess, and French, we went to the cafeteria where we made slime! We mixed ingredients together and made our very own slime to take home. The class had so much fun making their own slime!

The end of the day consisted of a Halloween dance party in the auditorium with a DJ! The kids all danced in costumes and had so much fun! All snacks that our friends brought to school for their classmates were sent home to be enjoyed at home. I took many pictures today they will be uploaded to the blog tomorrow!

Important Reminders:
No Homework Tonight!
 Spelling work due Friday
·         Be Safe and Have Fun!

Have a wonderfully spooky evening!

Happy Weekend Parents!
I am sorry for the late update! Friday we began our day with assembly where the knowledgeable month award winners were given their awards! Our friend Ali was voted by our class as the most knowledgeable, way to go Ali!

In math we continued our unit on measurement; we worked on measuring distances in meters. We began with an activity and then had a measuring scavenger hunt where the students were required to measure different things in the classroom with meter sticks!
 Working on measuring!
Working on measuring!
In language we completed the OWA post-assessment. Students wrote a narrative about the day that they turned invisible, I think that all of our hard work on story writing and descriptive writing really prepared the students as the narratives were very creative and well-written.

Here is Emana when we looked at my mystery bag and described items to work on our descriptive writing!
Here is Caitlyn who also volunteered to describe an item in the mystery bag to work on our descriptive skills!

In UOI we finished building our log cabins! The students assed grass around their houses, some gardens or rivers and other things that pioneers would have around their house! It is amazing to see the creativity and hard-work that the class has put into their houses and I can’t wait to post pictures of the finished products!
Just might have to do more crafts with these hands-on, creative, eager kids!

Hard at work!

Our log cabins look good enough to eat!

These were the houses on Thursday! I will post pictures of the finished product soon-so proud of all of the students hard work!

The end of the day students had their spelling test before gym and agendas. It has been such a great week in grade 3!

Important Reminders:
  • Math Homework: pg 160-161
  • Sign and return spelling test
  • Complete reading comprehension (only write in notebook)
  • Students can wear their Halloween costumes on Monday! Please do not bring weapons of any kind to school. If students choose not to wear a costume they are more than welcome to wear orange and black or casual wear.
  • All outstanding fees for aftercare need to be paid, as they are now late.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Happy Thursday Parents!

We had a very exciting day here in grade 3! We began with math where we started out a new unit on management. We had a scavenger hunt and measured various items around the classroom in centimetres.

In language we continued working on similes; the class really is coming up with creative sentences that are very descriptive! Early finishers were challenged to write a “super simile” that was good enough to be hung up on the wall! We had some amazing responses!

In UOI we began making log houses out of our cardboard milk cartons and pretzels! The class is having so much fun making their houses and they all worked incredibly well during this period! We are going to continue to work on our houses tomorrow as well!

We finished the day with music, gym, and agendas before kiss and ride!

Important Reminders:
  • Math homework page 158-1589

Happy Wednesday Parents!

Today we began our day with our math test! All of the students worked incredibly hard and I think that all of their hard work, studying, and review has paid off! The students were also challenged with a bonus question!

In language we were introduced to similes, we started by learning how to describe something using our senses. I brought in my magic bag where students reached in with their eyes closed and chose am item. They described it by what it felt like, smelled like, sounded like, and then what it looked like. They used those adjectives to create comparisons using like and as. I am hoping that students will use similes in their stories to make them even more creative!

In UOI we were learning about pioneer homes, first we looked through books at pictures of pioneer homes to inquire about what they looked like and were built with. Then we read a small passage to learn about the different kinds of pioneer homes. Tomorrow we will be building our own pioneer homes- every student needs to bring in a small box (ideally the size of an small milk carton) in order to build their house.
At the end of the day we had time to work on our descriptive writing by writing a short story. We finished the day with gym and agendas.

Important Reminders:
  • Read 25 minutes
  • Descriptive Story if not finished
  • Bring small box/carton
  • Spelling due Friday
  • Picture Day tomorrow-full dress uniform
  • Book orders and aftercare fees due Friday

Happy Tuesday Parents!

We began our day today with reviewing some of the key concepts from this math unit. Students worked on a review package that will be sent home tonight as well, some are finished but they have been asked to go over the questions again in preparation for their math test tomorrow. On their test they will be required to interpret circle graphs and pictographs, sort items into a Venn diagram, and draw a bar graph and pictograph. We have spent a lot of time on doing all of these things in class in order to ensure the students are prepared.

In language we focussed on story writing again, we began by reading a descriptive story and then talked about what made it good. We brainstormed some other ways to say “said” and went over good hooks and proper beginning, middles, and ends. The class then had the opportunity to demonstrate their most creative, best writing by writing about the day they found out they could fly!

After lunch, recess, and French we continued with our UOI on pioneers. We discussed the difference between the Aboriginal views of the land versus the pioneer view of the land. We began by reading an Aboriginal story (and Ms. Ross’ class joined us!), and then we brainstormed how the two views are similar and how they are different. We used a Venn Diagram to sort our ideas!
After second lunch and recess, we had music and gym, afterward we had just enough time to come back and compete agendas before kiss and ride!

Important Reminders:
-Math test tomorrow! Please review key concepts with students-they have brought home some review work to go over.
-Spelling due Friday (Lesson 7)
-Read 25 minutes and log
-Casual Day tomorrow, come in your casual clothes if you have paid the fee.
-Bake sale tomorrow, thank you so much for your contributions! We still have lots left to sell!
-Picture day is on Thursday; all students must come to school in their full dress uniform.
-ArtReach forms are going home; this is an amazing opportunity for students to get involved in exciting art workshops!

Have a wonderful night!

Monday 24 October 2016

Happy Monday Parents!

We began our day with math review in preparation for our test on Wednesday. I have sent home a math challenge to some students tonight that will be a bonus question on our math test. The math review is due tomorrow so that I can ensure that all of the students are ready for their test.

In language we finished out LHBW novel! The students are very excited and a little sad that we have finished the novel. We finished the novel with comparing ourselves to one of the main characters in the book. We used specific details from the novel to relate ourselves to the character that we are most like. We were great thinkers and reflectors!

After recess, lunch, and French, we worked on UOI, we used a large world map to discover where the pioneers had come from and to look at the journey that they travelled. We then coloured in our own world maps to show where they came from and where they came to. The students loved looking at the map and looking at where their family came from, where the pioneers came from, in comparison to North America.

After second lunch and recess we worked on writing our spelling in our agendas and then completed our LHBW work from earlier today. After gym we came back and had just enough time to play find the thimble before kiss and ride.

Happy Friday Parents!

We had a great day in Grade 3! Two of our friends were away today at cross country-and we missed them very much! We also celebrated a birthday today! Jasmeet is turning 8 this weekend and to celebrate he received a birthday certificate and a goody bag!

In math we conducted our own surveys; we began by choosing a question we would like to ask and then asked everyone in the class and made a t-chart. We then turned our charts into bar graphs! Those that finished their bar graphs early were challenged to create a circle graph with their data as well!

We are almost finished our unit on data management and today I sent home a review with the students to prepare them for their test on Wednesday.
In language we began with our spelling test and then read the next chapter of Little House in the Big Woods. We are almost finished reading the book (one more chapter!) and the students really are enjoying reading the novel together as a class!

After lunch, recess, and French we continued with our Pioneers unit. Our friend Iqra researched pioneers at home and decided that she wanted to do a short presentation to the class on what the pioneers ate and wore. I gave her a special Action Star certificate after she presented what she had found! We then learned more about who the pioneers were, where they came from and what their journey to North America was like!

After second lunch, recess, and music we spent time organizing our IB binders. The students who are new to St. Jude’s were introduced to their own IB binders that will follow them throughout their years at SJA and be a wonderful keepsake to illustrate their progress as learners and individuals!
We then completed agendas before heading off to kiss and ride!

Important Reminders:
  • Math homework page 110-111
  • Math review due Tuesday
  • Levelled readers went home today: your child was provided with a reader based on their DRA level please have them read the story and answer the comprehension questions in the package in their Reading Comprehension notebook. Please do not write on the printed pages as I am trying to save paper! Levelled readers will go home every Friday and be due back on Mondays.
  • We are in charge of the bake sale next week! Please bring in a nut-free dessert on Tuesday (Oct 25th) that we can sell at the bake sale to help raise funds for important school materials to help benefit your child’s learning!
  • Picture Day is next week (Oct 27th), after care fees due next week along with November lunch forms, after school program sign ups, and book orders.

**Important Request**We are going to be doing an art project for our pioneers unit next week and we need small cartons (like the size of small milk cartons) if anybody has any small cartons that they can bring in for our project that would be very appreciated!

Thank you all for everything you do!
Have a wonderful weekend!

Thursday 20 October 2016

Happy Thursday Parents!

We began our math lesson today with learning how to properly collect data. We learned that we must make sure to ask four very important things:
1.       What do we want to know?
2.       What question will we ask?
3.       Who will we ask?
4.       How will we show what we learned?

We then practiced answering these questions by conducting a short survey in our class about our favourite seasons. We then graphed the data with both a bar graph and a pictograph.

In language we began with a short quiz to ensure that students understand key concepts and content. Afterwards we read the next chapter where Laura’s cousin is stung by bees after continuously misbehaving. We worked in our journals to compare the story of Charley to the story of the Boy Who Cried Wolf. We discussed the lesson or moral of both of the stories as well.
After lunch, recess, and French we began our UOI unit on Pioneers! The students are very excited to begin this unit and I am so excited to inquire with them, explore with them, and learn with them!
Today we focussed on what we already know, and what we want to learn. Students looked through our new class library of pioneers to decide what they would like to learn! We then had some time to spend playing traditional pioneer games, we played cat’s cradle, and then we played find the thimble.
After second lunch and recess we completed an essential IB survey as a class for our upcoming evaluation!

At the end of the day we had time to finish organizing our IB binders and then completed agendas before heading off to kiss and ride!

Important Reminders:
  • Math Homework
  • Read 25 minutes
  • Spelling Test tomorrow: Lesson 6(review)

Aftercare fees, book orders, afterschool programs, lunch forms, Oct 24th

Have a wonderful evening!

Wednesday 19 October 2016

Happy Wednesday Parents!

Today we began math where we learned how to transform a data set into a bar graph. The students learned about the importance of labelling the axis, and also about keeping the scale consistent. The students each made their own bar graph and we will have more work on creating bar graphs in the next couple of lessons.

In language we read the next chapter of LHBW, we are nearing the end of the book! This chapter the students learned about how Laura and her family spend the summer in the Big Woods. The students were asked to complete a journal entry that related our knowledge of fractions to the story. They were asked how they would split two cookies evenly between three people, as Laura had to do in the book!

After lunch, recess, and French we continued with our UOI presentations-stay tuned for those presentations to be posted on the blog! We finished all of our amazing presentations today and that concludes our Manners and Safety unit! We then had some time to organize our work to be put into our IB binders-which we will finish tomorrow!
After second lunch and recess the students had music and gym before coming back to complete agendas!

Happy Tuesday Parents!

We had a busy day here in grade 3! We began our day with math where we are learning how to draw pictographs! The class helped me create a pictograph on the board and then they worked on creating a few of their own in their math notebooks.

For language we read the next chapter of our book and then transformed the chapter into a tableau. The students worked incredibly well and managed to complete all of the tasks well despite being interrupted by a fire drill in between our lesson! Stay tuned for some awesome pictures of our tableau scenes to illustrate the main events of the chapter.

After lunch, recess, and French, we spent a little bit of time reviewing concepts related to circle graphs, I found after checking the homework, that some students were a little bit confused about the concepts of 1/2, 1/4, and 1/3.

After reviewing that concept we moved onto UOI, I provided the class with some time to practice their presentations before we continued having students present their awesome brochures! I am so proud of all that they have accomplished!

Happy Monday Parents!

Today we began with Math, we are learning more about data management and graphing. Today we focussed on interpreting circle graphs (or pie charts). The students looked at a series of circle graphs and identified what they represented. We are going to focus more on interpreting graphs this week, some students are still having trouble with Venn Diagrams as well, as a result I will be sending home another Venn Diagram Sheet in order to have students practice.

As a reminder, there are two loops in a Venn Diagram, in one loop there is one specific characteristic (i.e., blue shapes), the other loop represents another characteristic (i.e., all squares), and in the overlap goes the items with both characteristics or attributes (items that are blue AND square).
In language we read chapter 8 of LHBW where Laura and her family went to Grandpas house for a dance. After reading we worked on writing formal invitations to go to Grandpa’s house. The students were required to use their best writing skills, including proper punctuation and spelling in order to complete their letters.

For spelling this week we have a review week, that being said the students spelling words are not in their agendas. They will be required to complete the Lesson 6 work in their workbooks and then for their test I will select certain words for the students to be tested on. That way the students will refresh their memory on all of the words we have learned so far.

After Lunch and recess the students had French, when they came back they were provided with more time to work on their UOI brochures as some students haven’t finished their pictures, those that were finished worked on their letters.

After second lunch and recess the students had music. After music the students were provided with some class time to practice their UOI presentations. We had time to complete some of the UOI brochure presentations, so far the students hard work is really paying off! Stay tuned for some of the videos!
We then completed our agendas before heading off to kiss and ride.

Friday 14 October 2016

Good afternoon and Happy Friday Parents!

We began our day today with math where we focussed on interpreting bar graphs and pictographs.
Each student was provided with a pictograph and a bar graph and worked in their table groups to come up with ideas as to what the graphs were telling them. Tonight I am sending home some extra work with Venn Diagrams, after checking the homework I found that the class needed more practice to refine their skills sorting items into Venn Diagrams.

In language we read the next chapter of LHBW and then worked on our instructional writing skills. In the novel Grandpa is making troughs for tapping maple trees, in class we translated the description of Grandpa making the troughs into instructions using bossy verbs. Bossy verbs are those that tell someone to perform a task or do something for example, “go”, “lift”, “grab”, “turn”. The class worked hard completing the instructions.

After lunch and recess the class worked on their UOI brochures. Many of the students have finished and have begun practicing for their informal presentations on Monday. Some students are still drawing the pictures in each section of their brochures but most have finished with the writing portion and they are looking great!

After French and second lunch and recess the class was provided with more time to work on their brochures. We then had our spelling test, and agendas. I decided to finish with a quick game of wax museum before the weekend!

Good afternoon Parents and Happy Thursday!

We began our day today with an interactive lesson on Venn Diagrams, using hulahoops as our circles on the floor we categorized different coloured shape blocks based on their differences and similarities. The students had a lot of fun with this as they were able to use manipulatives to create the Venn Diagrams.

After math we moved onto language, we read the next chapter of LHBW titled “Two Big Bears”. The students then reflected or wrote a story about being scared. They were encouraged to use as many describing words as possible, and to use their knowledge of proper quotation marks in order to create their short stories. We had some very creative stories by the end of the period!

After Lunch, Recess, and French, we continued with our UOI summative assignment, the students have been working so diligently on their safety brochures, and they really have been putting in their best effort. I am so excited for all the parents to see the student’s hard work. The brochures should be finished tomorrow in class, and then the students will informally present their brochures on Monday.
The presentations are not being formally graded; they are for the students to have the opportunity to practice their oral presentation skills.

The students then had second lunch and recess, followed by music and gym before heading back to complete agendas.

Wednesday 12 October 2016

Happy Wednesday Parents!

We had another busy day in grade 3! We began with math, today we had a pre-test before we begin our unit on Data Management. I wanted to get an understanding of what the class already knows so that I can tailor my teaching to meet their needs.

After our math pre-assessment we read chapter 5 LHBW. This chapter was about Sunday’s. After reading we discussed actions and consequences together as a class, then the students worked in their journals to reflect about a time that they made a choice that resulted in a consequence. We had some great reflections from the students who related their own experiences to those in the novel.

After lunch, recess, and French the class came back for UOI. For UOI the class was working on their safety brochure planners. Most of the class finished the planner and began working on transferring their information to their brochures. They are coming along very nicely and I am so proud of all of their hard work with this project!
After UOI we had gym and then came back to do agendas before kiss and ride.

Important Reminders:
  • -Spelling Work lesson 5 due Friday
  • -Read 25 minutes and Log
  • -Movie night money and forms due by Friday (this was a big hit last year and the students loved it!)

Thursday 6 October 2016

Hello Parents andhappy Thursday (Friday!),

Today we began our day with a math test. I sent out an email regarding a new math test being completed by the students on Tuesday. Please see the email for more information. I am more than confident that all of the students will be able to complete the new version of the test, however I have sent along practice questions should you see it necessary.

In language we worked on LHBW we read chapter 3 of the novel, this chapter was about making bullets and cleaning Pa’s gun. The students used their knowledge about safety to recognize the dangers of guns and understand why Pa had the girls learn how to take care of the gun safely. The students are really enjoying the novel thus far!

In UOI the students began to organize their safety information. Thank you so much for having the students prepared with plenty of information for their brochures! They will continue to organize information in the next couple of UOI periods. Students are very excited about what they are learning and being really good inquirers!

At the end of the day we had time to complete a short thanksgiving activity, we took fall leaves that were cut out of construction paper and wrote one thing that we were thankful for. We finished the day by playing “wax museum” after a day filled with tests I thought the students needed some fun!

Important Information:
-Sign and return Spelling test
-Read 25 minutes and log.

Math Test:

We will be having another math test on Tuesday, please see parent emails for more information.

Summative Information
There is a slight change the to the summative format and a need for clarification, the students will be required to do 4 types of safety: water safety, fire safety, bike safety, and community safety (school safety). They can then add in a type of safety that they are interested in (i.e., sport safety, car safety). Each type of safety will represent a page on their safety brochure.

Uniform Change
As it is Thanksgiving weekend, come Tuesday the students will be required to wear their winter uniforms. This means that they will be wearing their long-sleeved polo along with their pants or dresses.

Movie Night
The Parent Guild is hosting a movie night and dance on Friday, October 21. The movie (The Wild Life – PG) will run from 6:30-8:30 and the dance from 8:30-9:30. All of this will be taking place in the SJA auditorium. Free childcare will run from 6-6:30. Tickets are $10 and include popcorn, a bottle of water, and a treat. Pizza is also available for $2/slice. Students may bring a pillow, sleeping bag, or blanket and can come in their PJ’s!! Order forms have been sent home and are due back no later than Thursday, October 13.

Have a relaxing weekend and a happy thanksgiving!
Ms. Glover

Wednesday 5 October 2016

Happy Wednesday Parents!

We began our day today with an in-class math review for our test tomorrow. I went over each question individually that will be on our test tomorrow. While working I also had time to work one-on-one with some students who needed the questions to be explained again in a different way. In preparation for our test tomorrow students are taking home the completed review that they did in class today. I have asked that they explain each question to their parents this will allow them to verbalize their thinking and hopefully allow them to solidify their understanding for their test tomorrow. If you would like extra practice questions feel free to sue these sample problems and have students work on them again using different numbers.

In language we read the second chapter of Little House in the Big Woods. Students are showing exceptional interest in the novel, they are demonstrating their inquiry skills by asking thought-provoking questions and making inferences about what is going to happen next. After reading we used our best sentence making skills in order to answer some comprehension questions about the second chapter. I am very proud of all of my students who worked this period.

For UOI we continued talking about safety. Today we focussed our attention on Water Safety. We began by discussing why it is important to stay safe around the water. Afterward students were broken into groups. They worked on memorizing a stanza from a water safety poem and coming up with actions to go along with the poem. They worked collaboratively for the period in their groups. The students then presented their stanza of the poem and together as a class we formed the whole poem. Stay tuned for a video coming later!
After second lunch and recess, the students had music and gym before coming back to finish agendas and head to kiss and ride.

Important Reminders:
  • -Math test tomorrow (in-class review has been sent home, have them explain the questions to you)
  • -Spelling Test tomorrow and spelling work due tomorrow
  • -Students will be working on their summative for UOI in class tomorrow, they need to bring in information printed from the internet and/or books on different types of safety in order to work on their brochure in class.
  • -Read 25 min.
  • -Movie Night Forms are due on Oct. 13th
  • -Friday is a PA day-There is no school that day.

Have a wonderful night,

Ms. Glover

Tuesday 4 October 2016

Good Afternoon Parents and Happy Tuesday!

Today we began our day with math; we started by working on a problem solving question together as a class (the final question on the math review sheet). We went over it 3 times together as a class and then I went to each person individually to ensure that they understood how to complete the question.

They should be able to complete the question on the review sheet with very little assistance. We then worked on subtraction word problems. The class is very good at answering word problems, they know that if a question is asked in words they must answer in a sentence! Please remember that our unit test for Patters in Addition and Subtraction is on Thursday, and therefore the math review work is due tomorrow so that I can ensure students are prepared for their test.

After math we began our novel unit on Little House in the Big Woods. I am so excited that we are beginning this novel study together. We read the first chapter together as a class, and then we used the description that Laura gave of her house in the book to complete a diagram of both the inside and the outside of her house. This novel coincides directly with our next UOI unit that I am also very excited about! The students had many questions about LHBW and life back in the late 1800’s.

After recess, lunch, and French, we continued with our UOI unit on safety. Today we talked about fire safety. We began with a discussion of how to prepare your house in case of an emergency related to fire. Then we worked on creating “escape plans” for a floor plan of a house. The students worked on finding the quickest and safest route out of a house in case of a fire.

After second recess and lunch we continued our UOI and language work. The students had time to finish their LHBW work, along with their fire escape plans. This time was used as a catch-up for students who needed extra time to complete work. We also had our last Manners Around the World presentation during this time. We completed our agendas before heading to the gym.
Mr. H was away today so Ms. Ross and I led a very fun and interactive phys-ed class for the two grade 3 classes.

Today we had our very first action star! Our friend Krina went to a very interesting place to learn more about Safety for our UOI unit. She wants to keep it a secret until her UOI presentation to surprise the class! Here she is with her Star certificate!

Manners Around the World Presentations

Sorry about the delay here are our manners around the world presentations!

Monday 3 October 2016

Some helpful summative information...

Here are some useful websites for the students to gather their information:
·         www.kidshealth.org (you can search any of the safety topics in the search bar)
·         http://sparky.org/parentpage/parents.htm (this one is really good for finding fire safety information)
·         http://elementarysafety.com/ (this website has links to each of the types of safety we are looking at in class for our brochures)

Your child will be responsible for bringing in online research to be used in the brochure for Thursday October 6th. They may also bring in book as well, they will have time in class to read through and identify important information that they would like to include in their brochure. Please do not have students complete additional work at home, the only work to be completed at home is the research.

Thank you very much,

Should you have any other questions feel free to email me any time.

Happy Monday Parents!

We had a very eventful day here in Grade 3. We began the day with math; I have sent home a math review sheet for our upcoming test on Thursday. We started our math class today with a mini lesson based on the first question on the Review Part 2 page I have sent home. We spent a great deal of class time on this so the class should be able to do this at home without assistance. The second question on the last review page will be covered in class tomorrow. For the rest of the period we worked on subtraction strategies as it is a tricky concept, tomorrow we will be working on subtraction word problems.

After math we worked on Language. We began with spelling words, the spelling test this week will be on Thursday so please ensure the spelling work is completed and returned by Thursday. After spelling we had a lesson to introduce our new learning profile trait for the month of October-knowledgeable. We brainstormed what being knowledgeable means and then read a story about a woman who was very knowledgeable about her children. After reading the story the students demonstrated their understanding of being knowledgeable by writing about something they are knowledgeable about in their journals. They then discussed how being knowledgeable leads to independence. All of the students worked very hard in their journals.

After recess, lunch, and French, we worked on UOI. We began with brainstorming about Bike Safety. The class came up with some very important safety rules for riding their bikes! Next we learned proper hand signals for riding your bike when you are turning left or right or stopping. We played a fun game of Simon Says to demonstrate our learning of the hand signals. Afterward we worked on drawing a diagram of both a personal safely riding a bike and a person unsafely riding their bikes. The students had to write about each picture to show that they understand proper bike safety!
After second lunch and recess we had music and gym, we then came back to compelte agendas before kiss and ride.

Important Reminders:
  • -Math Homework Due page 52/53 for tomorrow
  • -Bike Safety sheet if it was not finished in class
  • -read 25 minutes and log
  • -Math review has been sent home today please work on tonight, and tomorrow night, and return by Wednesday in order to be prepared for the test on Thursday.
  • -Spelling test is Thursday October 6th 2016 please have spelling workbook work completed and submitted to me by that day.

Have a wonderful night,

Ms. Glover
