Happy Wednesday Parents!

We had a great day in third grade! We began by doing our math homework from last night… as someone (me) wrote it down wrong on the board and blog! My apologies! After we all finished our homework we began a new lesson about ordinal numbers, counting numbers using their order (i.e., first, second, third). The class lined up according to height, birthdays, and in alphabetical order and we identified the first in line, the second, fifth, etc. The class then worked in their textbooks to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding.

In language we assigned roles for the Christmas concert. I know some students were a little bit discouraged, but I am so proud of the students who exhibited their maturity even when they didn’t get the role they wanted but congratulated those who did. We had just enough time for a read through before lunch!

After lunch, recess, and French the students came back and we began our next UOI unit on Forces and Motion! We began by identifying what we already know about forces-each student received a sticky note and wrote down one thing that they know. Then we began looking through forces and motion books and to determine something we want to know about forces and motion. I am very excited to begin this unit with the class!

After second lunch and recess the class went to music! There was no gym today so instead we began sorting through our note books to find the things we would like to include in our IB binders. Some binders are getting VERY full, and we will need to get new and bigger binders to hold all of the students amazing work. I will try and track down binders for the students whose binders are getting to full (those that have been at SJA for some time) hopefully I can find some!

Important Reminders:
  • Math homework page 14 and 15
  • ArtReach tomorrow, please have students bring in an old t-shirt or art smock for the day!
  • Spelling work due Friday
  • Food and Toy donations can be brought in any time!

Have a wonderful evening!

Happy Tuesday Parents!

We had another great day here in Third Grade! We began our day with Math where we began by going over the lesson from yesterday and checking yesterday’s work. Then we had a short lesson on rounding numbers to the nearest ten and the nearest 100. The class worked on the mini whiteboards to answer different questions. They then completed a series of questions from the textbook to demonstrate their understanding.

For language we learned about a close reading strategy called LQ3R, students begin by looking at a story, looking at the pictures and the title, they then ask a question about the reading. Students then read the story, recite (look for the answer to the question), and review (think about what they learned). Students then read a short passage and wrote a paragraph about the story.

We have a new challenge to encourage reading! The Reading Challenge! Each students was given a book mark with 9 circles on it, each time they finish a book they are required to write a summary and then they receive a hole punch on their book mark! After all of the holes are punched they will get a prize!

After lunch, and recess, we had UOI were re continued with our pioneer presentations. I am so proud of all of the students and everything they have accomplished! They all have been presenting so well!
After second lunch and recess we continued with our last few presentations and then we headed off to gym before completing agendas and going to kiss and ride!

    Happy Monday Parents!

We began our day today with Math where we focussed on placing missing numbers on a number line based on positioning. We played a missing number game to kick us off and the students did very well!I am going to cover the topic again tomorrow and go through the textbook work with the class in order to ensure all of the students understand the concept.

In language we began discussing the Christmas concert, we began by reading How the Grinch Stole Christmas, and then I read the skit that I created for the Christmas concert. There are enough roles and speaking parts for each student’s to have one! I am excited to work on the play with them! We also spent some time on Spelling; this lesson is a review lesson, the students will be tested different words from the past couple of weeks.

For UOI we began our pioneer presentations! I am so proud of all of the student’s hard work, it has really paid off! We had four presentations today, mainly those who created videos presented their videos today, with lots of eye contact, clear speaking voices, and interaction with the audience! I will upload the videos as soon as possible!
After second lunch and recess the students had music before gym. We completed agendas before heading off to kiss and ride.

    Important Reminders:
    • Math Homework Page 8/9

    PD Day Camp

Hello Parents! SJA is offering PD camp for students on select days over the winter holidays.
PD will be available on December 23rd, January 9th, and January 10th.

    Hello Parents!

I hope you all are having a wonderful and relaxing weekend! Yesterday we began our day with math games, we started with a scavenger hunt game where students were required to identify numbers from clues around the room using their knowledge of place value and odds and evens. The class then had time to colour a mystery picture using a hundreds chart. I thought after such a busy week with summatives and the science fair the students deserved a much needed break and they had so much fun colouring mystery pictures!

In language we started by completing our spelling test, then when we were finished the class was provided more time to work on their summatives. We began by brainstorming what makes a good presentation and the class came up with some wonderful ideas including eye contact, memorizing what you would like to say, being confident, and speaking loudly and clearly. Afterward most students were working on completing their presentations or were practicing their presentations.

After lunch, recess, and French we had more time to work on our summative assignments. I circulated the class to help students, who were still working on finishing their assignments or their presentations, I am so proud of all of their hard work!

After second lunch and recess I had a special surprise for the class. The students were a little upset that most of their balloon cannons were broken at the science fair on Thursday, but they kept their heads held high and still let the little ones try their cannons. I was so proud of their caring attitude and their maturity. As a result I brought in the materials to make new balloon cannons (the students really wanted to take them home!), so before heading off to gym and kiss and ride we made balloon cannons!

Special note! Over the weekend our friend Emana will be celebrating her 7th birthday! She brought in some yummy treats for us to take home! Thank you Emana and we hope you have a wonderful birthday!

    Important Reminders:
    • Spelling Test Signed and Returned
    • Report cards went home, please complete the parent comment section and return
    • Reading comprehension homework, I am seeing amazing progress in terms of students reading through the reading comprehension homework given over the weekends!
    • Practice for summative presentations (they have been pushed to Monday based on students pacing)
    • We will be having a winter food and toy drive starting on December 1st (a letter will be sent home on Monday with more details-the grade threes are in charge of running it!)

    Have a wonderful weekend!

    Thursday 24 November 2016

    Happy Thursday Parents!

It has been a wonderfully exciting day here in grade 3! We began our day with math where we learned about counting using a number line! Most of the students have worked with number lines before so it wasn’t hard for them to use our giant number line I built in the hallway to create number patterns and practice their skip counting. Students then had time to work from their textbooks on some number patterns!

For language we practiced for our Science Fair presentation, and then we had time to work on our summatives, they are coming along so nicely and the students are being incredibly creative putting together the final touches of their assignments!

After lunch and recess the students went to French. After French the class came back and it was time to be judged for our Science Project! I am so incredibly proud of our class; they all presented their parts with clarity and confidence! I am just waiting on the video to send so I can upload it to share with all of you!

After our presentation we had more time to work on our summative assignments, the class is moving towards preparing their presentations, and some students are even practicing their presentations!
After second lunch and recess we had time to do agendas and clean up the classroom before our parents came to see our Science Experiments! Thank you to all the parents that came! I know it was a little bit chaotic with the little ones shooting the balloon cannons! But our class had so much fun making them and they learned a lot about force and motion!

    Important Information:
    • Math Homework page 6-7
    • Spelling Test Tomorrow (lesson 11)
    • Read 25 Minutes
    • Aftercare Fees, Book Orders, December Lunch Forms due tomorrow!

    Have a wonderful night!

    Wednesday 23 November 2016

    Happy Wednesday Parents!

We began our day with math, we used our mini whiteboards again to identify missing numbers in a hundreds chart! The class was really good a distinguishing patterns and using their knowledge of number patters in order to find the missing numbers. The class then worked from the textbook to extend their understanding fo hundreds charts to numbers up to 1000.

In language we prepared our presentation for tomorrows Science Fair! Each student has a speaking role and they all worked diligently practicing their lines and working together to allow the presentation to flow smoothly. I am very excited to show all the parents their hard work.

After lunch, recess, and French the class worked on their pioneer summatives. They are coming along so nicely and I am so proud of all of their hard work. We are aiming for Friday to start their presentations and I have already received some videos from students!
After second lunch and recess I provided more time for the summative work and then the students went outside for gym to play some pioneer games!

    Important Information:
    • Math homework p 11-19
    • Spelling Due Friday (lesson 11)
    • Read 25 minutes
    • Practice Science Script (if your child brought them home)
    • Fill out Parent Teacher Interview request form (sent home today)

    Tuesday 22 November 2016

    Hello Parents and Happy Tuesday!

We began our day today learning about patterns in a hundreds chart, the class was able to use the whiteboards and markers to colour in many different patterns on the hundreds charts including counting up by 2’s and 10’s. I then challenged the class with the grade 4 math work where they had to look for different patterns in calendars, and relate two different patterns-students did this very well!

For language we finished our Science Project! We extended our knowledge based on our understanding of forces and motion; we talked about momentum and speed of different objects and learned about how different weighted objects have different momentum which also depends on the amount of force you apply!
After lunch, recess, and French, the class had time to work on their summatives for pioneers!

They are coming along very nicely and I am excited about all of the different things students have chosen to do! Just as a reminder, they are due on Friday-that means that if your child is doing a video it needs to be brought in on a USB or sent to me by Friday via email! Thank you for your understanding!
After second lunch and recess the students went to Music and Gym before completing agendas and heading off to kiss and ride!

    Important Reminders:
    • Math Homework page 2-5 (lesson 1 and 2)
    • Read 25 Minutes
    • Spelling due Friday (Lesson 11)
    • Aftercare fees, book orders, lunch forms due.
    • Summative Assignments are due Friday (work done in class)

Extra Note: The Science Fair is on Thursday, parents are welcome to come any time after 2:30 to come and see all of the hard work the different classes have put into their science experiments! Ours will be set up in the classroom and students will be here to explain all of the different components! I hope to see you there!
