Happy Thursday Parents!

We are almost done our first week back after March Break! We began our day today with math where we worked on dividing by 2, 5 and 10. Students seemed to really grasp this concept and understand that in order to be divisible by 2 the number has to be even, to be divisible by 5 the number has to end in 5 or 0, and to be divisible by 10 the number needs to end in 0. Some students are working with dividing by numbers with remainders. I did a brief introduction to remainders today and if students would like to be challenged they are encouraged to look at dividing with remainders and practice at home
(ex. 18 / 5 = 3 R 3)

In language we worked on drawing conclusions from our novel study of Stuart Little. We brainstormed what the main idea of the novel might be, the class came up with some amazing ideas including friendship, being a risk-taker, and accepting and appreciating differences. Students then provided examples from the text.

After lunch, recess, and French we came back to the class and had another free-write. This time students wrote for four minutes on the following topic: “Long ago their lived a wizard who created a potion that could____________”. After writing we had some risk-takers in the class who were willing to share what they wrote!

The class spent the rest of the period finishing their fractured fairy tale planners!

After second lunch and recess a few students who were absent during our UOI presentations for Urban vs. Rural presented their posters.

We ended the day with gym before completing agendas and heading off to kiss and ride.

Hello Parents and Happy Wednesday!

We had another great day here in third grade! We began our day with our morning announcements where the March Caring award winners were announced this months winner: Krina Rathod! Great work Krina and thank you for always being so caring!

For math we worked on division with arrays (a group of items organized into equal rows and columns). The class is really understanding division and have been actively participating throughout lessons!

For language we finished reading Stuart Little! We weren't very happy with the ending of the novel as it was an open-ending and we didn't get to see if any of our predictions were going to come true! The class began summarizing the novel and tomorrow we will work on drawing text implications and understanding the main idea!

After lunch, recess, and french we came back and had UOI. In UOI today we began by talking about perspective and how stories can be very different depending on who is telling them! We read a fractured fairy tale called, "Seriously Cinderella is SO Annoying" from the perspective of Cinderellas step-mother. Then the class got creative and began brainstorming their own fractured fairy tales! They chose to change certain elements from the story they chose and they are coming up with some amazing ideas!

After second lunch and recess we had music and gym before completing agendas and heading off to kiss and ride!

Important Information:

  • Math page 88-89
  • Make corrections 86-87

Happy Tuesday Parents!

We had another day filled with learning today! We began our day with math where we began division. Today we learned that we can divide items into smaller groups. We worked on using manipulative's to show different division sentences! We also learned that division is the opposite of multiplication and when we will use division outside of school!

For language we read the next two chapters of Stuart Little, since we are nearing the end of the novel we worked on making predictions for how the novel will end while using specific details from the story to support our answers.

After lunch and recess we had UOI where we worked on identifying features of a fairy tale. We used our knowledge of common fairy tales to come up with what every fairy tale includes, we then worked in groups to see how four common fairy tales use all of the elements!

Today we also began our very first four-minute free-write, students were given a notebook and a topic and they were asked to write consistently for four minutes straight-this is to improve their writing speed and to also allow them a creative outlet to express their thoughts, and they are able to go back and finish stories if they feel inspired by the writing topics! We had some amazing written work completed today!

After french, second lunch and recess we came back to class and finally organized IB binders (there will be a lot of work coming home for students to keep at home!)

We ended the day with outdoor recess and agendas before heading off to kiss and ride!

Important Reminders:

  • Math homework 86-87
  • Spelling Lesson 22 due Thursday
  • Read 25 minutes
  • Casual Day tomorrow (regular end of month casual day)

Happy Monday Parents!

I am so happy to be back in the classroom learning with all of my amazing grade 3’s! I missed them all so much over the break and I hope you all had a fantastic and relaxing holiday! We began our day with math where we focussed on responding to multiplication word problems. We followed some steps in order to ensure that we answered the questions well and checked over our answers.

In language we read the next two chapters of Stuart Little (11-12), and we practiced our critical thinking skills by responding to some comprehension questions. We had to think about what it would be like to be Chairman of the World (like Stuart) and what rules we would have!

After lunch, recess, and French, we began our new UOI unit! The class is very excited to begin our “Tell Me a Story” unit! Today we focussed on non-fiction text features, we learned about items including:   a table of contents, labels, a zoom in, a caption, a header, an index, and bold print. We then had a scavenger hunt with partners to find those items in different books!

After second lunch and recess we ended the day with music and gym before completing agendas and heading off to kiss and ride!

Important Reminders:
  • Math Homework (Drill sheet, please time students to see how long it takes them to complete the sheet-if it takes them awhile that is okay!)
  • Stuart Little Ch 11-12 Comprehension if it wasn’t finished in class
  • Read 25 minutes
  • Casual Day Wednesday
  • Friday $2 casual day for Autism Awareness Day

Have a wonderful night!

Ready for Our Next UOI!!!

Hello Parents!

I am feeling incredibly excited today as I set up for our new UOI unit when we return from March Break! Our next unit is.... Tell me a Story! We will dive into the wonderful world of writing full force while learning about different genres of story telling! I am so excited to give all of the wonderfully  creative students in our class a chance to express themselves through writing!

I also picked up some more books for our little classroom library! Something that all of the students know about me is how much I love used books! They have so much history and character! I picked up some more challenging books for all of our advancing readers!

I hope you all are having so much fun on your holiday!

Hello Parents and Happy March Break!

Our day yesterday was filled with lots of fun and learning! We began our day with math where we made our multiplication cue cards to help us remember our times tables! The class had so much fun making them!

For language we read the next two chapters of Stuart Little and had a vocabulary scavenger hunt! Students were required to find new words in the two chapters that they were unfamiliar with and then search up their meanings in the dictionary-we learned many new words!

After lunch, recess, and French we began our Country/City Summative presentations- and they were FANTASTIC! Each students unique presentation was filled with fun facts, other information, showcasing their learning throughout the unit, and questions for the audience! I couldn't be more proud of how far the students have come with their learning during this unit. We learned about different communities and how they are important to the rest of the world. The class WOWed me today!

After second lunch and recess we had more time for presentations, and then we ended the day with agendas before heading to the auditorium for a Dance Party!

Important Information:

  • Math Package for March Break, and practice flashcards.
  • Reading Comprehension (students received two books and there are two different topics they are stapled into notebooks, unless students didn't hand them in and then I couldn't add them in, I told them I would post them on here:

Week 1: Text-to-Text connections:
1. This book reminds me of another book I have read because... (be specific)
2. The characters in this book remind me of the characters in another book because... (Be specific)
Week 2: Authors Purpose
1. What is the authors purpose? (is it to inform, entertain, or persuade?)
2. How do you know that? (is it fiction or non-fiction, use examples from the book)
  • Be safe and have fun!!
Have a wonderful break! I hope it is relaxing and filled with fun, adventures and lots of laughs!

Happy Thursday Parents!

We are one school day away from our March Break! Today we began our day with a house game! Students participated in a relay race from each house! All of the students look fantastic today in their house colours! When we came back we completed our report card reflections. We then worked on using a multiplication chart in order to answer multiplication questions. Students were very excited to see how the chart works and it came in very handy when they were answering questions! We also noticed so many patterns within the chart!

For language we read the next chapter of Stuart Little, the class is really enjoying the new vocabulary we are being introduced to and how descriptive E.B White is! Today we made a family tree with all of the major characters we have been introduced to so far in the book!

After lunch, recess, and French the class came back and had their last class period to work on their Country/City summatives. We will be having our summative presentations tomorrow!
