Happy Tuesday Parents!

We had a great Pancake Tuesday here at St. Jude's! We began our day with SJA's annual pancake eating contest in the Auditorium! We also had our monthly award winners. This month we learned about being open-minded. Jaya was selected from our class to win the open-mindedness award!

We then came back to the class to begin our new math unit on Multiplication and Division! We started today by discussing Addition Sentences and how they relate to Multiplication Sequences. For example:
3+3+3+3=12
OR
3 x 4=12

In the Multiplication Sequence we multiply the amount of items in each group by the number of groups

For language we began learning about making text-to-self connections. We read a book about our new IB monthly attribute: Caring, and the students shared a response to one of the three questions:

1. What did this book remind you of?
2. Do you relate to any of the characters in the book?
3. Did the events in this book remind you of anything in your own life?

After lunch and recess we came back to class and students were provided with time to work on their UOI summative assignments! They are learning so much about their different communities and are very excited to share their learning with the class!

After French, second lunch, and recess, we finally had time to have our country-city debate! The groups were both so fantastic that I couldn't even pick a winner!

We ended the day with gym and agendas before heading off to kiss and ride!

Happy Monday Parents!

We had a great day back here in grade 3! We began our day with math where we completed our fractions unit test. Students received differentiated tests based on how they performed throughout the unit! So far the tests look good!

For language we discussed comparative and superlative adjectives, we learned about what they are and how they can be used in order to compare different nouns. For example:

"A kitten is small, a hamster is smaller, and a snail is the smallest."

The red word is the regular adjective used to describe the noun, the yellow word is the comparative adjective form, and the green word is the superlative adjective word! Students then completed task cards around the room to compare different nouns!

After lunch, recess, and french the class came back and began working on their summative assignments. They are very excited about the cities/towns they have chosen! Some students will need to do some more research at home and bring in additional information tomorrow to help them fill out their graphic organizers.

Students require information on the following topics:
  • Landforms (urban/rural, is it near any mountains, valleys, hills, or significant land features, for example bodies of water).
  • Jobs (what do people do for work? do they work in service industries or are they farmers etc?)
  • Resources (what do they make in your community? Do they mainly have natural resources-fish, trees, water, minerals?, or are they man-made-steel, plastic etc.)
  • Recreational Activities (what do the people who live in your community do for fun? Do they play outside or go to restaurants? Can you provide examples?)
  • Importance (why is your community important? Are they a large tourist destination? DO they have important natural resources that they provide to other areas? etc.)
  • Other information or fun facts (here you can look up other interesting information)
After second lunch and recess the class ended the day with music and gym before completing agends and heading off to kiss and ride!

Important Information:
  • Read 25 minutes
  • Spelling Lesson 20 due Thursday
  • Bring in any addition summative information (see what is required above)

Have a wonderful evening,

Hello Parents and Happy Friday!

We had a wonderful day here in grade 3! We began the day by heading into the auditorium for the Annual Oral Competition. We started with the younger students and worked our way to the grade 3's! All of the students who performed were fantastic and should be so proud of themselves! Our class loved cheering on Emana and Shane as they both performed fantastically on stage!

After lunch and recess we went back into the auditorium to watch the grade 4-8 speech competition! The grade 3's loved seeing what they will get to do next year when they are in grade 4! Again the presentations were amazing and we learned so much!

We ended the day with lunch, recess, and gym before completing agendas and heading off to kiss and ride!

We even spent some extra time outside today to get our energy out!

Important Reminders:

  • Field trip forms and money are due Monday at the latest!
  • Math test on Monday-I have provided some extra review sheets to be completed over the weekend!
  • Sign and Return Spelling Test
  • UOI research is due for Monday as well. This is just the research stage. Students are to look up a community of their choice (ex. Burlington, Caledon, Brampton, etc.) and they are to find out information on the communities landforms, recreational activities, jobs, resources (natural and man-made, and any other important information about the community) They will then use this research to create an informative brochure or poster about their community in class

Have a wonderful weekend!

Hello Parents and Happy Thursday!

We had a fantastic day here in grade 3! We began with math where we worked on reviewing key concepts related to fractions. We discussed numerators and denominators, we also talked about sizes of different fractions and compared smaller and larger fractions. We did fractions of a length, fractions of a set, and fractions of shapes. We also spent some time talking about mixed numbers and improper fractions. Each person has a review package to complete as homework (if they finish this one I will provide another one tomorrow to prepare over the weekend for their test on Monday).

In language, we learned about rebuttals in debates and practiced by playing a game called rebuttal tennis. Students were at the front of the room and given a topic to debate about, they practiced rebuttals and counter-arguments. They had so much fun!

After recess, lunch, and French we had some time for our poem presenters to practice in the auditorium. We then came back and the class was given time to work in their groups on their debates for country vs. city.

After second lunch and recess we had music and gym before completing agendas and heading off to kiss and ride.

Important Information:
  •       Math Review Package (if you finish tonight, and I will provide extra practice)
  •       Sign and Return permission form and bring in money for field trip as soon as possible (I know it is short notice!)
  •       Return Summative for Monday with topic and research.
  •       Spelling due tomorrow lesson 19
  •       Tomorrow is our poem presentations! Our class will present in the morning between 9:00 and 11:00 am in the auditorium.

Have a wonderful evening!

Some Reminders!

Tomorrow is the Talent Show Auditions-Students who would like to participate have already signed up.

The Mock Trial Fundraiser Causal day is on Friday. Students can bring in a toonie and they can wear casual clothes, or dress as judges, layers, or prisoners.

Tomorrow the French Bake sale will continue as well, items include buttons, ring pops, and cream puffs!
Happy Wednesday Parents!

We had a great day here in grade 3! We worked very hard and learned so much! We began with math where we learned about mixed-numbers and improper fractions. We learned that fractions can be improper (ex. 11/4), and we learned how to change that number into a mixed-number (ex. 2 ¼ ) I have posted how to change a fraction to a mixed number and visa-versa below to help with homework.

After math, we learned about debates. We discussed what a debate is, how we should use facts to support our opinions in order to make a stronger argument, and we also learned how to decide what what our own opinion is. We played a game called lines of argument where students either agreed with a statement or were against a statement and moved to different sides of the room.

After lunch, recess, French, we started working on our own debate. Students were working in groups, half the class is assigned to be the country and the other half is the city. They are working together to come up with arguments to explain why their community is better than the other. They are being great communicators!

I would like to congratulate our two poem finalists for Fridays competition. All of our class performed very well and I am so proud of them! Emana and Shane will represent our class on Friday!
After second lunch and recess we spent more time planning for our debate.
We ended the day with gym and agendas before heading off to kiss and ride.

Movie Night!

Tomorrow is the deadline for Movie Night forms and Money happening this Friday!

Movie night is always a fantastic opportunity for students to spend time with each other outside of the classroom!

Hello Parents and Happy Tuesday!

We had a busy day today filled with poems galore! We began our day by having everyone from all of the grade three classes into our room and we listened to some amazing poems!

We had time for a quick math lesson where we learned about writing and naming fractions. Most of the students have already learned how to write fractions as symbols (1/2) and how to write it in words (one-half), so it was easy for them!

After lunch, recess, and french we had the rest of the grade 3 poem presentations! I am so proud of our class for their hard work and dedication in practicing their poems at home and really coming up with great presentations! Tomorrow the winners from our class will be announced! I wish I could pick them all but only two from our class will be chosen to go to the auditorium on Friday!

After second lunch and recess we headed to music where we presented our soundscape! Jaya was an action star when she made her very own rainmaker to sound like the rain in the country! Way to go Jaya! All of the sounds together sounded amazing and really made the sounds like the country or the city!

We ended the day with gym and agendas before heading off to kiss and ride!

  • Important Reminders:
  • Math homework 154-155
  • Make corrections to Math 152-153

A Response from our Remembrance Day Letters to Soldiers

To all the students at St. Jude’s Academy.
Thank you for the thoughtful letters you guys wrote for us!  The drawings you guys did are beautiful!  We were thrilled to receive them.  Canada has sent us here on ‘Operation Hamlet’, which is Canada’s contribution to the United Nations Mission in Haiti.  There are five of us here who are part of Canada’s Task Force Port-au-Prince.  Port-au-Prince is the capital of Haiti and is where the Mission Headquarters is located.  Maybe your teacher can show you where that is on the map.  We work here with police officers from around the world (also a lot from Canada).
Haiti is a country that has experienced a lot of problems in the past such as natural disasters (heavy rain, hurricanes and earthquakes). We are here as part of the military contribution to help ensure the Haitian people, especially children and women to have a stable and secure environment to live in.  The country recently elected a new government which will lead the Haitian people and hopefully create a safer and healthier place to live for everyone.
Sometimes it can be a little lonely when you are away from family and friends, particularly during the holidays. It is such a nice feeling for us that you guys took the time to send us a little something to show us support for Remembrance Day.
Remember, you are part of the future for Canada so make us all proud! Although it is our pleasure to serve Canada the best that we can, sometimes it means being away from our family and friends for a long time. Your letters to us help to ensure the high morale of our Task Force. Good luck at school, summer is coming!
We sent a collage of pictures as well.  It has all of our pictures on it, and some of the activities that we do here in Haiti.
Thank you very much.
Task Force Port-au-Prince

Important Information about the Poem Competition

Happy 100th Day Parents!

We had a fantastic day here in third grade! We began the day with math where we used the number 100 (since it is the 100th day of school-can you believe it!?) and separated it into different even groups with fruit loops to determine fractions! We were able to show 1/2 of 100, 1/4 of 100, 1/5 of 100, and some groups could even show 1/10 of 100, and 1/20 of 100! They all worked so hard!

In language the class was provided with time to work on their poems! They were working in partners, and then at the end of the language period I watched a few of the students perform their poem! Some students still need a little bit more practice, and they will be presenting on Tuesday so please have the students work really hard over the long weekend to be prepared!

After lunch, recess, and French the class came back and we spent UOI painting pictures of what we think the world will look like in 100 years. We had some amazing ideas from flying cars to floating buildings! The pictures turned out so beautiful and they loved working with paints!

After second lunch and recess we had out spelling test, and students completed agendas before heading off to gym. We ended the day with a quick freeze dance party before heading off to kiss and ride!

Important Information:

  • Math Homework page 152-153
  • (make corrections to 150-151)
  • Reading comprehension (the work is stapled to the inside of the comprehension notebook)
  • Community Book (the requirements are inside of the book as a checklist-they are to be completed for Tuesday)
  • Practice Poem (students will be performing and judged in class on Tuesday)
  • Sign and Return Math Test (the agendas have included spelling test but I didn't have them marked in time to send them home-sorry!)

Have a wonderful and relaxing long weekend!

Happy Wednesday Parents!

This short week is almost over! We began our day here in grade 3 with math where we are learning about fractions of a set! The class has been fantastic at identifying fractions of a set and fractions of a whole! Some of our students are even making the connection between fractions like 6/12 and 1/2, which is great level 4 thinking!

In language we worked on our poems! Tomorrow students will be presenting for me and the class. Some students are still working on memorizing their poems and they need to do some more poem practice at home in order to ensure that they are prepared for their presentation on Tuesday. Again the expectation is for the poems to be memorized and for the students to have accompanying actions.

After lunch, recess, and French we began working on a Community Book, where students are using their knowledge of different communities that we learned about in class in order to create a book. They are coming along very nicely and students will be bringing them home this weekend in order to ensure that they are completed to the best of their ability. I see many great thoughts being applied!

We ended the day with music, gym, and agendas before heading off to kiss and ride.

Important Information:

  • Math page 150-151
  • (make corrections to 148-149-they are circled)
  • Practice Poem!!
  • Spelling test tomorrow (lesson 18)

Have a wonderful evening!

Happy Valentine's Day!

We had a great day here in grade 3! We began the day with a house game!

We then had time for a short math lesson on fractions of a length. Students then used this to complete Valentine's Day themed task cards that were around the room related to fractions.

Afterward we began making a Valentine's Day card using paint and Q-Tips to draw hearts and other Valentine's shapes with dots! The students were very creative!

After lunch, recess, and French, the class came back and we worked on our Valentine's Day Craft. We made ornaments out of yarn! The students were patient even though the craft required some of them to spend time untangling and working together! They all turned out beautifully!

We ended the day with sharing the Valentine's Day treats our classmates brought in and a dance party before gym, agendas, and heading off to kiss and ride!

Important Reminders:

  • Math page 148-149
  • (check and correct page 146-147)
  • Practice Poems (I will be having all of the students perform the poems on Thursday for our class before they are judged on Tuesday!) (the expectation is for the poem to be entirely memorized and complete with actions!)
  • Read 25 minutes
  • Spelling Due Thursday (lesson 18 practice all of the words!)
Have a wonderful evening!

Monday 13 February 2017

Happy Monday Parents!

We had a great day here in grade 3! We began the day with our morning meeting and then the class had a surprise for today's birthday girl! Entirely planned by them, I took Jaya out of the classroom to "photocopy" and they all hid behind desks to shout "happy birthday" to her as she came back into the room. It warms my heart knowing how much the students in our class care for each other! After the surprise we went right to work with completing our OWA post-assessment. We have been working on letter writing for quite a while so today we put all of our knowledge and skills into writing our very best letters yet!

After lunch, recess, and french, we came back to class and had UOI. We had a very exciting UOI period today! We joined classes with Miss. Ross's class and the classes were broken into groups who then became the expert on a different topic related to city communities. The students then used their research skills in order to learn about their topic as a group! We have some very knowledgeable students who were great inquirers today and asking really important questions!

We ended the day with music, gym, and agendas before heading off to kiss and ride!

Important Information:

  • Practice Poems
  • Read 25 minutes
  • Spelling Lesson 18 (review lesson-study all words)
  • Tomorrow is a Valentine's Day spirit day! Wear red, pink, and white! Also should your child choose to bring in treats to the class please remember that treats must be able to be taken home at the end of the day with students (as part of our food policy we do not give out treats in class they must be able to travel home, i.e., treat bags, wrapped candy., non-food treats., etc.).

Have a wonderful evening!
