Happy Friday Parents!

We had a busy day here in 3^rd grade! We began our day with an assembly where the Inquirer awards were given out for each class. In our class we held a vote where the students wrote down the name of the person who is an Inquirer. Our class decided on Shane! Shane is both curious and inquisitive; he frequently asks critical questions that go above and beyond what is happening in class. After the awards we participated in a yoga house game!

After the game we came back to class and the students worked on some word problems in math. They do have homework tonight as I decided to focus more attention on addition and subtraction skills instead of math games this week in preparation for their upcoming math test at the end of next week.

After math we had language where all students completed the spelling test and then worked on quotation mark work. I have sent home the spelling tests and really appreciate them coming back signed by parents to ensure that they have been seen.

In UOI we have begun working on the safety portion of our Manners and Safety unit. The students were given an emergency survival scenario, and asked to rant items that they had in order of importance in order to survive. The students were lost in the woods with a series of items ranging from matches to chocolate bars, and worked together in groups to come up with how they would handle this situation. Groups were then asked to justify their opinions to the class and then reflected on what was the most difficult part of this scenario. The answers to the most important items varied, some groups claimed that having walkie talkies was the most important, and one decided that water was the most important. Afterward we discussed the importance of being good communicators, being a good friend in emergency situations, looking out for one another and being responsible. This scenario was a lot of fun for the class but it also stressed the importance of knowing what to do in emergencies and staying safe.

After lunch and recess we continued with our UOI presentation for Manners Around the World. I am so proud of all of the work that the class has accomplished and the creativity that the put into their assignments. These presentations were very well done, and I am so happy that all of the students felt comfortable at the front of the room presenting to the class. The videos of the presentations will be posted shortly so you can see your children in action and all of their hard work!

We finished the day with Gym and agendas before heading off to kiss and ride!

Happy Thursday Parents!

We had a very interactive day here in grade 3! We began our day with math where we worked on subtracting 3 digit numbers requiring borrowing. The students worked incredibly well and I am hoping that with more practice we will all become experts.

After math we participated in the Terry Fox run which was held in the auditorium due to weather, the students were very excited to participate and we walked for the entire half hour! Each student received a sticker on which they could write who they are running/walking for today. Many students included loved ones, all people with cancer, and some decided that they were running for Terry Fox.

For language we worked on proper use of quotation marks, the students were provided sentence strips and macaroni noodles to place the quotations marks and commas in the correct place. Quotation marks can be a little tricky so we will be spending more time on this especially in our story writing unit. The class loves working with manipulatives to demonstrate their understanding of concepts.

After lunch, recess, and French, we learned more about Terry Fox, who he was, what he did, and why he did it. We related it to our current UOI unit by reading a story about Terry and his friend Rick and discussing how Terry and Rick were friends, their responsibilities as friends, and how they made a difference in the lives of others. The students were incredibly curious about Terry Fox and cancer in general. They asked many thought-provoking questions and were very interested in learning more.

Afterward we talked about what a friend is, the class then took their thinking and created cards that show what being a friend means to them. This was a nice way to conceptualize our learning about what a true friend is.

After recess and second lunch the class had music and gym, after which we came back and finished our agendas before heading to kiss and ride.

We did not have time today to finish our Manners Around the World presentations which will be done tomorrow and posted tomorrow for you to watch your amazing children in action!

Happy Wednesday Parents!

We are halfway through the week! We began our day with math; we focussed on adding three-digit numbers today. The children seemed to be able to do this very well. The only thing that we have to remember is to line up the numbers properly according to place value.

In language continued working on contractions. The class is great at turning two words into one word with an apostrophe, and they came up with some wonderful sentences using contractions in them. I see their writing and grammar improving every day!

In UOI we continued our lesson on Manners Around the World, the students finished their group work and developed presentations (complete with lots of actions!) which they practiced until French.

After French, recess and lunch the students presented their Manners Around the World countries. Some of our students need to present tomorrow as we ran out of time. The presentations I have seen so far have been amazing! The whole class has been participating and having fun learning about other countries! I will post videos tomorrow when all of the presentations have finished.

-Math homework in the math book page 46/47, this homework is very short and should be able to be completed independently.

-Spelling test is on Friday, please keep practicing those spelling words and complete the spelling work before Friday!

Good afternoon Parents!

Today has been a great day in grade 3 filled with hard workers and lots of participation!

We began with math and worked on rounding-first and front-end estimation. The students seemed to be doing well with this in class and had (a pretty lengthy!) page to complete to practice their skills. Those that finished the sheet in class do not have math homework tonight, those that did not have been sent home the sheet to work on for homework.

As a reminder for parents:

Rounding-First: We round to the nearest 10 or 100 (we have been mainly doing to the nearest 100 thus far). If the number ends in 5 or 50 we round up: for example, 150 would round to 200.

Front-End Estimation: We use the number in the 100’s or 10’s column and ignore the rest (the rest turns to 0’s). For example, 521 would round to 500, or 588 would round to 500, 88 would round to 80.

You must first round and then add or subtract to get your estimated sum or difference.

After math we were working on contractions (words that combine two words with an apostrophe, ex. we would= we’d). To illustrate this we made “foldable contractions” which show the full two words when opened and when folded show the contraction. The students then used contractions in a sentence. They all seemed really excited to make these and they will be sent home after we are finished with contractions for parents to see!

After lunch, recess, and French, we worked on UOI, we began by talking about respect, open-mindedness, and curiosity. We spoke about how even though people may be from the same place they may have very different lifestyles and traditions which is alright and should be respected. This was a precursor to our “Manners Around the World” activity where students are investigating a certain country and exploring their customs, traditions, and way of life. This is to have them understand and be open-minded with the hopes of creating internationally-minded individuals. The students were very curious, and we will be working on this again in class tomorrow.

After second lunch and recess we had music and gym before coming back to the class to do agendas!

-Tomorrow is casual day, if you have not yet paid for your child to participate please send them in with the fee tomorrow for them to be able to wear casual dress tomorrow!

-Math homework page if it was not completed in class is due tomorrow.

-Spelling work is due Friday

-Read for 25 minutes each night and log in logbook

-Bake sale is being held again tomorrow!

-People are losing both toys and uniform pieces. Please make sure that your child’s uniform is labelled, and also remind them that if a toy comes to school it is their responsibility.

Kung-Fu Punctuation!

Happy Monday Parents!

We had a busy day in Grade 3! We began with math and learned about rounding! We are going to spend more time on this in class, so if your child has a difficult time on the homework tonight please do not be concerned as we will work on it some more as a class.

After math we learned a cool way to remember/reinforce our knowledge of proper punctuation use! Kung-Fu punctuation was a really fun way to learn when to use proper punctuation. I will upload a video shortly to show you all of our hard work!

We then had our table setting quiz, thank you for preparing the students this weekend and having them practice at home.

After second lunch and recess we worked on spelling until gym, after gym we finished agendas until the end of the day!
